Hi!

I call upon all UN delegats to support our Animal Protection Act (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/11501/page=UN_proposal) to protect all animals on earth.

Thank you!

--------------------------
Description: Basic endanger Animal Protection Act

Every animal on Earth has the right to co-exist with humans. A growing number of animals is put on the list of endangered animals and many animals are on the verge of total extinction.

Therefor, we the people of earth must:

1. Recognize animals right to exist as significant part of Earth ecosystem.

2. Every state must protect all endangered animals from hunters. Each state will knowingly and according to its best abilities prevent and prosecute hunting of endangered species.

3. Each state must donate at least 40 independent DNA samples (20 of each sex) into the World DNA Sample Bank which is funded by all members. This will provide funding for cloning animals in case the government cannot protect the animals from extinction.

This is too vague and doesn't follow enough specifics (i.e. category, type, etc) to qualify as a resolution, thus you shall have to re-draft it before submitting.

May the blessings of our otters be upon you.

Hard as it may be for some animal rights folks to believe, hunters and anglers have done more for animal conservation (and habitat reclamation) than have all the PETA and Sierra Club members combined; witness Ducks Unlimited and B.A.S.S.

Also one of the greatest conservationist presidents of the US, Teddy Roosevelt(who by the way did more for the conservation and the enviroment than the Slickster did), was a feverant Hunter. Y'all woudln't have any national parks or wildlife preserves if it wasn't for Teddy. Today Ted Nugent does excellent work promoting wildlife and habitat preservation. If anything, Hunters and Anglers probally care more for wildlife and habitat than tree-huggers. OCC. I don't hunt or fish, but I probally will join Ducks Unlimited or B.A.S.S. just to help them with their efforts.

Besides Venerable Libertarians already covered a lot of this with his protection of endangered animals act.

For most threatened species, the main danger is not from hunters (though there are a few notable exceptions, including rhinos). Far more species are being driven to extinction by the destruction of their habitats.

Additionally, we do not consider animals necessarily to have the right to exist and so dispute clause 1. Of course, we do very much wish to protect the environment and preserve species. But this is not our sole concern - human wellbeing must be considered when making decisions. For instance, if malaria-carrying species of mosquitos could be eradicated and replaced by similar mosquitos, different only in that they did not carry malaria, and this changeover could be achieved without significant harm to anything else, we would most likely be in favour of carrying through such an effort. The case would become even stronger if, as is considered possible, HIV evolves to be able to use moquitos as a vector to infect more humans.

Clause 3 gets written down as a WTF? You need to be more specific: DNA samples of WHAT? Shall all countries donate 40 DNA samples of each person in their territory? Or just 40 human DNA samples?

Or we can go with what looks like your intention. 40 DNA samples of animals? What if we have more than 40 different types of animals in our nation (heck, I'm sure most nations could match this just visiting one block and asking for a DNA sample from all the pets there). Or are we talking about 40 DNA samples for each species? Do you have any idea how many billions of DNA samples you're talking about for each nation?

Needs a total overhaul.

This doesn't get at the real heart of why animals are endangered. Hunting is generally not the worst problem. In most cases, it's destruction of habitat from either harmful commercial practices or the encroachment of residential areas into formerly wild spaces.

This proposal could also be quite troublesome in practice. Some species that are endangered in one country or even worldwide are overabundant in other countries. In some cases, these overpopulated "endangered" animals could even be a threat to other rare animals in the area if one species preyed on the other or the two consumed the same food sources. There are also cases in which endangered animals are diseased or have been socialized to interact with humans in ways that make them dangerous (think man-eating bears and tigers). This proposition could potentially make it very difficult for responsible countries to manage their wildlife resources.

Greetings,

An Animal Protection resolution had been discussed here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=433032) and submitted (as noticed here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=434788)), not having reached quorum by a few dozen votes. However, after conferencing with the UN Delegate of my region, we came to the conclusion that the low support could be mainly due to the vacation period. On this line of thought, I decided to resubmit the proposal: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=446354
