My First Resolution

New Mediterranean

Now that I've got two endorsments, I have made up my first proposal I like you to support. It allows citizens of UN-Member nations not to go to war against their will.

It is quite short, as it is my first proposal, but I will eventually submitting more, eventually longer proposals to improve democracy.

It's called a proposal. I approve it, but it needs 131 more approvals from delegates like us. It's a good start though of your 'resolution-writing' career.

I wish I could approve it, but I'm not a delegate :(

I question the legality of this resolution as it would ban compulsory military service which is one of the things that The Empire of Tajiri_san's citizens are obliged to be a part of there for it could be a gameplay issue.

Here's the proposal text:

Right to Neutrality

A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Category: Human Rights
Strength: Significant
Proposed by: New Mediterranean

Description: The Emirate of New Mediterranean hereby proposes that citizens of a UN-Member country shall have the right to be neutral, and not to go to war if a UN Member country goes to war against a country.

The Emirate of New Mediterranean hereby proposes that a UN-Member country shall not force a citizen to join the army, or serve in War Service against their will.

This proposal is quite short, but will in being have a positive effect on democracy.

Approvals: 3 (Athens and Midlands, Cultural Relativism, Rolling Stone)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 129 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Thu Aug 25 2005

Sadly the branding of your proposal makes it illegal, so you're going to have to re-write your proposal. First, I'd recommend taking a look at the stickies at the top of this forum, especially the rules one:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=420465

I'd also recommend looking at the list of useful threads:

The third post down ( http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=8681196&postcount=3 ) contains two guides, one to developing ideas for proposals and one excellent guide on writing techniques in resolutions -I personally have found the second one very useful.

Try fleshing out your proposal with arguments and more details - for instance, does this apply only to conscripts, or are you saying that people who've already volunteered to join the armed forces are free to quit as soon as war is declared? Once you've come up with a new draft, post it here on the forums to get feedback and refine it before you submit it - many players are very happy to help out with improving proposals, and most of the best resolutions underwent this process at length before coming up for vote.

Good luck!

The Free Land of CTerryland does not believe in compulsory military service, but feels that banning it is an infringement of nations rights to self-determination, as such we refuse to approve this endorsement.

This proposal is a fine idea that just needs a bit of fine tuning. The core concept is quite agreeable, to me at least. Like _Myopia_ said you need the specify if voluntarily enlisted soldiers may opt out of a certain conflict. Also would only citizens who want neutrality be effected? Or would the country have a poll to decide it's stance? Excellent idea on banning compulsory service in the armed forces anyhow. This will be great once you clean it up.

This act would unfortunalty have a knock on effect on crime.
Ensuring each citizen spends a short time in the armed forces, lowers crimes and increases national patriotism.
I hope this act never goes through as it would result in anarchy!

That's interesting. You see, many many nations manage to avoid anarchy and high crime rates without forcing their people to become trained killers and indoctrinating them with nationalism.

And aside from your fallacious assumption that without compulsory military service everyone will turn into criminals, why is it desirable to fuel the growth of irrational loyalties such as patriotism? Our moral obligations are to our fellow intelligent beings everywhere - not to imaginary lines on a map, and definitely not to governments.
