Baseball League Steps Up To The Plate

Government Acts

The Issue

The Batter Up! Baseball League has begun to grow in popularity and is now seeking government support in establishing teams and stadiums throughout the nation.

The Debate

1. "Holy cow, is this gonna be great!" hollers BUBL President and sports nut Roger Wong, wearing a fashionable giant foam finger on his right hand. "Baseball is just what Powerhungry Chipmunks needs right now! Think about it: soda, popcorn, hot dogs... oh, and I'm sure the economy will benefit somehow, too! All we need is the government funding to build stadiums and teams, and we'll be on every TV and in every city in the country!"
[Accept]

2. "You're going to spend the taxpayer's money on WHAT?" counters Minister of Finance Freddy Barry, from a newly furnished office. "I mean, I love playing a good game of baseball every now and then, but does the government really need to go around supporting this? The only people that are going to benefit are a bunch of fat-cat burger vendors and bored hicks with nothing better to do on Sunday afternoon! We need to stop spending so much money on these ridiculous games and get back to what's really important: running the business of the country."
[Accept]

The Government Position

The government is preparing to dismiss this issue.

Issue by: Pilot
Editor: The slaglands

According to my daily issue, Pilot's no longer a nation.

Author of NS HIV AIDS Act (as well this issue apparently), producer of so many helpful “PUNNS” polls, and one of the only players ever to broach the subject of repealing "Gay Rights" without flame/flamebait, I will miss the player dearly if this is the case.

That is a true shame, as Pilot was IMO one of the more significant UN players.

I was going to create a Wiki entry for the Pilot United Nations News surveys (PUNNs), but now want to nominate Pilot for entry to the NSWiki hall of fame.

Mods, can you tell us the date of his last activity so we can find the termination date of his nation?

Remember, it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Some people have summer plans.

I just revived a nation 892 days dead. If you're planting flowers on the grave, I'd stick 'em in pots, myself. You might have to move them in a hurry.

Remember what happened with DLE. We ad the whole funeral, then she returned, and now who knows?

That's beautiful!

Regarding deceased nations, I think it's safe to say now that Sophista ain't coming back...

:( I remember Sophista's discussions about that one-er-financial proposal (I could never remember it's name) that Sophista never got to pass. It was about the best discussion in the UN I'd ever seen. Much sadness.

Aye, they also hosted an outstanding debate on appropriate tools for defence waaaay back in early 2004, when I were a wee nipper of a nation. Plus the great and glorious (and tragically incomplete) Dodgeball War.

PS: your sig is providing me with a wonderful soundtrack for work! I'm thinking I should do the same, except that my tastes are rather, er, downbeat.

OOC: Present company excluded ... ;)

Sophista and Pilot are among two of my personal favorite NationStates players. I made one link to Sophista in one of the UN Wiki entries. Why is Sophista not planning on returning?

Thanks, I found all the songs at a xanga site, which is supposed to be for providing the teeny-boppers who use xanga with streaming music for their blogs.

Here's a link to the site: http://www.xanga.com/home.aspx?user=Music_Galore

Most of the songs on there are rap, rock and country. I usually send my time in the soundtrack/compilation section.

Off-Topic: But for what it is worth, I absolutely love most soundtracks. On a related note, my personal favorite genre of music happens to be "ambient electronic" or "dark ambient", which can best be described as the type of music you might expect to associate with Science Fiction. :)

I'd love nothing better than to roleplay / pretend that Miervatia City has a large opera haus and via government grants promotes this artform, but sadly the only pictures I have of nice European opera houses are from when it was raining!

*sigh* I guess I'll just have to make another trip to find a RL location worthy of stealing!!!

Not sure what happened to Sophista. He just... stopped.

PC, ta for the link; it was Beethoven that did it for me.

Never would have guessed from the Dead Can Dance quote in your sig, heh. Ever listen to Lisa's solo albums?

Ah, but how many people who don't quote Switchblade Symphony would known about Lisa and Brendan??? ;)

To be honest, I'm one of those people who actually like Brendan's vox a bit more ... but I don't own any of her solo albums yet. Do you have a recommendation?

As for "dark ambient" ... people are also surprised to find that I can love listening to bands like Dead Can Dance, Das Zeichen, Love Is Colder Than Death, Collection D'Arnell Andrea ... but that I also find Converter, This Morn' Omina, Black Lung, Gridlock, Sonar, Hypnoskull, Haujobb, etc. to be equally amazing. Though somehow I felt that a Hypnoskull "quote" would be massively inappropriate for NationStates. ;)

He'd been in and out of the game for about a month before that, and has died and been resurrected. It's a pity that he's gone.

This Belgian 1980s band, whos name is was taken from the famous United Nations resolution 242 which created a Palestinian state, is famous for naming "Electronic Body Music".

[I'd do a NationStations UN band, but I've yet to find a terror EBM project that has including samples from ol' King Joccia yet.] ;)

I think Berkylvania (mark II) may be about to go under again. Mind you, their last UN activity was well over a year ago.
