""Repeal "Stop privacy intrusion"
A proposal to repeal a previously passed resolution

Category: Repeal
Resolution: #10
Proposed by: Clocha Liath

Description: UN Resolution #10: Stop privacy intrusion (Category: Human Rights; Strength: Strong) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: In these times of increased global terrorism, each indigenous government has an obligation to protect its people from harm.

In order to combat global terrorism, governments must be able to intercept certain person's personal communication. If this resolution remains in place, governments will remain powerless to stop the people who want to destroy freedom, wherever they find it.

By allowing governments to track terrorists, we will bring the fight to the terrorists' front door.

The fight against terror will be greatly aided by our ability to track down terrorists through their personal communication.

I might add, once this resolution is repealed, a new one will be proposed which limits a government's ability to listen to a person's personal communication. A government will only be able to intercept personal communication if they have sufficent proof that the person in question, is a terrorist or intends to commit an act of terrorism or other such assorted crimes.

In these days of international, global terrorism, we require assistance if we are to destroy the terrorists once and for all. By repealing this resolution, we will be taking the first step towards this goal.

Approvals: 8 (Missouriania, Iznogoud, Noctaurus, Kiloran, Bunny Pancake, Newcastle Seperate, JOHNATHAN CENA, The Perfect Number)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 130 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Sun Jul 31 2005 ""

Please help me get this proposal brought to the General Assembly.

We don't feel the need to take rights away from our people - or anyone's people - to fight fashionable evils.

I might add, once this resolution is repealed, a new one will be proposed which limits a government's ability to listen to a person's personal communication.
You can't guarantee that.

I would think that privacy intrusion should be ok BUT ONLY IF there is a good reason with supportive evidence.

Which is what Resolution 10 does....

Just so people know what we're addressing:

Stop privacy intrusion

A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Category: Human Rights
Strength: Strong
Proposed by: Petkania

Description: We feel alarmed by the increasing intrusion of privacy by the governments in the world. Therefore, we propose that legislation is passed by each UN member that all personal communication, including, but not limited to: face-to-face conversations, mail, telephone, radio, LAN and Internet shall NOT be intercepted by the government, unless there is serious evidence of a planned or committed crime.

This evidence shall be reviewed and approved by the Judiciary before eavesdropping, phone tapping, network traffic monitoring, and other kinds of interception of communications is allowed.

Our office is in support of a repeal of the resolution in question for the usual national sovereignty reasons.

The Triumvirate* supports the resolution in question, and will not support any such repeal of it.

*Well, Justice Loreni and Chairwoman Sikura do. Lady Faren regards it as a prime piece of garbage, but as she's not about to get either of the other two onside, the point is moot.

The government of Telidia will not unfortunately be able to offer its support in favour of this repeal. In our humble opinion terrorism is not an excuse to through away the rulebook and destroy the civil liberties of our citizens. Whilst we accept that societies will always have rogue elements wishing to do harm it simply does not follow to restrict the rights of the many for the ills of the few. Understanding what causes the terrorism by examining the social, national and international policy of ones government may yet yield far greater results than restriction of freedoms.

The current resoultion is sufficent to tackle crime, it is neccessary to prevent abuse of position, our tribes law which was created to conform the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2005 still allows our law enforcement community to tackle problems, we frequently use directed and intrusive survellance techniques, covert intelligence sources, and undercover operations, conforming to this resoloution with great success, we find it causes no problems in the hunt for terrorism and fight against crime, and more importantly allows our police force to police with consent of the nation as they feel they feel if they are doing nothing wrong then we will not 'watch' them.

The Commonwealth of Pontinia feels that the current resolution on privacy intrusion (#10) is perfectly acceptable, and will fight this repeal every step of the way.
