DRAFT: "The Traveling Microcredit Bazaar"

05-07-2005, 17:13
This is mainly in response to the RL success of 'microcredit' and 'microloans' and I think this is a fairly non-confrontational way of the NSUN supporting microcredit, though I'm not certain this is the best wording. Especially, I think it might be a little too wordy to understand easily.

Also there's the question of the 'commission' involved. Is that a Game Mechanics violation (as Hack always says that we should just assume oversight by the UN)? If that's the case, I would gladly make it a commitee instead ;).

Any comments, questions, or suggestions (or anything else, for that matter) are welcome.

Traveling Microcredit Bazaar

The United Nations,

REAFFIRMING the United Nations’ stance against poverty and suffering,

TAKING NOTE, via the impoverished throughout the world, of the cyclical nature of poverty across generations, and of the detremental effect of poverty among a people to the surrounding peoples, nations, etc.,

OBSERVING prefious success of so called “microcredit” at enhancing the lives of people or peoples currently trapped by deprivation, as well as the society surrounding them and future generations among them,

DETERMINING that citizens in UN nations, who can participate in “microcredit” with ease, would likely give more regularly and freely via microcredit (which has greater effect than other forms of humanitarian aid) if they but had information regarding microcredit and assurance of its financial security and honesty,

1.DEFINES “microcredit” as the loaning of relatively small sums of money for the purpose of sustaining life and employment, the repayment of which is supported by local communities alongside the individual(s) who received the loan;

2.ESTABLISHES “The Traveling Microcredit Bazaars”, which bazaars will travel among all member nations for the purpose of educating citizens in member nations on microcredit and of securing and presenting reputable organizations by which those citizens can to contribute humanitarian aid through microcredit;

3.FORMS “The Microcredit UN Commission” (The MUNC) and CHARGES The MUNC with overseeing ”The Traveling Microcredit Bazaars”, verifying reputable microcredit organizations, facilitating educational literature concerning microcredit to all member nations, as well as the distribution of that literature as arranged with individual national governments;

4.EMPOWERS The MUNC with the authority to negotiate with national governments, on behalf of “The Traveling Microcredit Bazaars”, the location, length of stay, and extensiveness of the visit one of “The Microcredit Traveling Bazaars” will make in that nation;

5.ENCOURAGES UN citizens everywhere to aid the impoverished through microcredit, and, specifically, to attend the traveling bazaar in their home nation.

6.EXPRESSES its utmost gratitude to any who contribute to the abolition of poverty, be it through microcredit at one of “The Traveling Microcredit Bazaars” or otherwise.

Hmmm. Not sure about the committee, but I like that it respects national sovereignty (which is important because some nations don't need such a system) and leaves individuals to participate voluntarily.

Overall, it looks good. You really need a new title though. "Bazaar" brings to mind flea markets and swap meets. Also, lose the committee or commission or whatever it is.

Yeah, after thinking about it, there really isn't any problem with just saying "the traveling microcredit bazaar" negotiates, etc. I mean, other resolutions just assume oversight and such.

I'm not sure what I could change the name to. I'll keep that in consideration tonight and bring out a new draft tomorrow--with the committee merged and perhaps a new name for the event.

Greetings.

We know what this could be: the Microcredit Roadshow, which is the front end of the UNMA - the NS UN Microcredit Authority. Have grant, will travel.

We believe that it could work this way: there is a list (or thread) containing requests for UNMA grants for starting up mini-enterprises. UN Members interested would sponsor these. This would act like an open bazaar and would be the de facto implementation of the UNMA. No need for bureaucracy beyond that needed to maintain the list and bring together the requests and the donors. A plus for both small businesses and social welfare?

Vastiva already incorporates something like this in our nation and our region.

Unqualified support.

ooc: Not sure yet, looks interesting and original though. While I remember, I spotted a typo: in the line beginning 'OBSERVING...', 'prefious' should be 'previous'.

Greetings.

We mourn the passing of a talented reader. Our telediviner Argyros Stormbrow called this proposal to our attention with the line, "OBSERVING perfidious success of so called 'microcredit' at enhancing the lives of people..." and we were greatly motivated to support said proposal. Unfortunately, Master Stormbrow has had an accident with two lightning bolts striking from a passing shower.

We are still motivated to support the correct reading of the proposal however.

This is Version 1, which does as Roathin suggested, in renaming the bazaar and its overseeing authority

The Microcredit Roadshow

The United Nations,

REAFFIRMING the United Nations’ stance against poverty and suffering,

TAKING NOTE, via the impoverished throughout the world, of the cyclical nature of poverty across generations, and of the detremental effect of poverty among a people to the surrounding peoples, nations, etc.,

OBSERVING previous (ie. perfidious:p) success of so called “microcredit” at enhancing the lives of people or peoples currently trapped by deprivation, as well as the society surrounding them and future generations among them,

DETERMINING that citizens in UN nations, who can participate in “microcredit” with ease, would likely give more regularly and freely via microcredit (which has greater effect than other forms of humanitarian aid) if they but had information regarding microcredit and assurance of its financial security and honesty,

1.DEFINES “microcredit” as the loaning of relatively small sums of money for the purpose of sustaining life and employment, the repayment of which is supported by local communities alongside the individual(s) who received the loan;

2.ESTABLISHES “The Microcredit Roadshow”, which will set up chapters in all querying member nations for the purpose of educating citizens in member nations on microcredit and of securing and presenting reputable organizations by which those citizens can to contribute humanitarian aid through microcredit;

3.FORMS “The UN Microcredit Authority” (The UNMA) and CHARGES The UNMA with overseeing ”The Microcredit Roadshow”, verifying reputable microcredit organizations, managing queries for a roadshow chapter, facilitating educational literature concerning microcredit to all member nations, as well as the distribution of that literature as arranged with individual national governments;

4.EMPOWERS The UNMA with the authority to negotiate with national governments, on behalf of “The Microcredit Roadshow”, the location, length of stay, and extensiveness of roadshow chapters within member nations;

5.ENCOURAGES UN citizens everywhere to aid the impoverished through microcredit, and, specifically, to attend local roadshow chapters;

6.EXPRESSES its utmost gratitude to any who contribute to the abolition of poverty, be it through microcredit at one of “The Microcredit Roadshow” or otherwise.

This is Version 2, which eliminates the oversight (and still renames the bazaar as Roathin suggested--darn you're good :))

I actually like Version 2 a little better. I just think it's a little more straightforward. What are your thoughts?

Greetings.

We approve heartily of such initiatives. They are humanitarian and altruist in nature, have minimal cost (in many ways of defining 'cost') and do not clash with issues of sovereignty while remaining appropriately internationalist.

We would encourage NSUN members of all kinds to support the Roadshow. Let us, in a (somewhat unusual) spirit of universal siblinghood, lend our unqualified (for reasons of national sovereignty) support to this form of empowerment. Let us 'get the Show on the Road'.

I prefer version 2, but would gladly support either. I look forward to the Roadshow rolling into an Ecopoeian town.

My nation prefers the title Bazaar over Roadshow for cultural reasons. But an alternative might be "Market".

Very well done, and Darkumbria can, easily, support this as it in no way infringes on my country's sovreignty rights.

I like this, very original. Personally, I prefer the Travelling Microcredit Bazaar, as it sounds more interesting.

OOC:This is due to the fact that there is a programme on telly in the UK called the Antiques Roadshow, and I can't stop drawing comparisons. But hey.

IC:Ignoring that ^_^, it's your resolution (and title) , so I'll support it either way.

Hm... that's two now for the original title...I'll give this some thought (I may not submit this week--I'm probably going to be a little too busy with something else).

I think Bazaar will work. I might have to explain that I mean the word in the sense of "a market" rather than in the sense of "odd or strange", but I like the word regardless of how many times I have to define it. So, here's the final draft (unless there are objections or comments, etc.) with "Bazaar" instead of "Roadshow". I have made no other changes to the text. The proposal should be submitted sometime next week (I'm thinking Tuesday or Wednesday right now).
