I'm not convinced that this is something that the UN needs to legislate. Why not simply have those nations interested in such an endeavor put it together themselves?

IC: I hate it when RL bleeds over into the game.
OOC: The concerts were cool, especially the Pink Floyd reunion. I spent most of the day watching them. But I gotta agree with Krioval.

I don't think this resolution would be legal

I don't know RL bleeding over into the game isn't always bad, just remember the Tsunami Warning System (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=UN_past_resolutions/start=89), but it this case it is a bad idea.

OOC: This may be a controversial view, but Live8 was basically an excuse for a whole lot of white people to feel good about themselves for doing essentially fuck all in the name of eradicating poverty, in the process overshadowing the more politically significant rally in Edinburgh (some 250,000 participants, the largest ever seen in Scotland).

Now, I know you're proposing Live Aid, but that wasn't without its own gaping flaws. The NSUN should concentrate on passing meaningful, enforceable legislation on this issue. As for the real world... fucked, quite frankly.

Apologies for hijacking, ranting and profanity, but I feel pretty strongly about this issue...

Or even to acknowledge the root cause of the problem (hint: it ain't the debt).

I think I see where you're coming from. Debt is important, in that servicing it consumes vast amounts of many nations' budgets, but trade is more important. However, the 'it's all down to corruption' arguments are ludicrous and offensive.

The concerts were described as 'consciousness-raising', which I think is an accurate assessment, and a positive thing. Obviously, we haven't made it so that overnight everyone in the world knows the entire history of Africa, from conception of civilisation to postcolonial present, and has a full working knowledge of the world 'free' trade system, but it's a step in the right direction. Caution is justified, but it would be wrong to slip into the kind of knee-jerk cynicism I've seen in some of the less desirable sections of the British corporate media.

Yeah, I know... but what will happen the day after the G8 summit? They won't deliver, you know. What they will do is dress up their mealy-mouthed 'commitments' in airy terms that will persuade too many people that they've made a difference. Geldof and co will have played into the hands of the G8 unless they have the courage of their convictions and reject the sop that Blair, Bush and co will fob off on us.

We'll see. [uberOMFGhijack]
