Vastiva has submitted the following proposal, acting as an agent for Yelda. We like the proposal and have given it support.

I'm sure many of the masses have comments?

International Cheese Act
A resolution to reduce income inequality and increase basic welfare.

Category: Social Justice
Strength: Significant
Proposed by: Vastiva

Description: The General Assembly of the United Nations,

RECOGNIZING the unequaled nutritional value of Cheese and other Dairy related products;

NOTING the responsibility of nations to provide adequate food supplies for their citizenry:

AFFIRMING the UN's role as guarantor of well-being for the benefit of the population and thus of the member nations,

2. REQUESTS the free distribution of said products to those unable to purchase them at fair market value and defined as worthy of such by the individual member nation;

3. DISCOURAGES STRONGLY the sale or transfer of "imitation" Dairy products;

4. CAUTIONS AGAINST research into the production of "imitation" Dairy products;

5. CALLS UPON UN member nations to advance research into new and improved methods of Dairy production and distribution as a priority within their research budgets.

Oh my.

Out of curiosity, why isn't this "Free Trade"?

I'll have to send you to Yelda for an answer - I just agreed to submit it for them.

Greetings.

We understand why it is not 'free trade'. It is dumping of goods (seen in a purely economic perspective) from a massive over-producer onto a luxury-goods cottage (cheese) industry. Our rare cheeses and subtly differentiated animal lactation products will be overwhelmed, our serfs will be sclerosed. 'Free trade' is so often a disguise for economic and biological hegemony.

We will have to redeploy more thaumaturges to food production. We believe that variety in foods, given a bare sufficiency, and proper nutritional advice are what can increase basic welfare - not the supply of endless crud. Our serfs are fit, healthy and have upward mobility through meritocracy.

We would insist on the addition of a cheese-monitoring committee that would monitor the quality of cheese products on the market. For example, such a committee would be able to ensure that nations producing cheeses of distinctive odour and pungency be rewarded for their efforts.

We remain disappointed by this blow against the lactose intolerant majority. If this passes, it will mean that we will literally be farting in your general direction. Reconsider, lest you rue this day!

This is serious business? Oh sheesh. If this passes, I'm going to write one to dump part of Darkumbria's huge trout population on the market. After all, fish is better than beef.

Truthfully, this is a worthless attempt to dump someone's excess dairy on the nations of the universe. I, completely, disagree with any country making money off of a resolution in the UN. The UN is about creating peace and tranquility in the universe, not about creating business opportunities for countries that can not create their own.

It is a humanitarian proposal designed to promote better nutrition. Yelda has no Economic motive here, our major industry is Book Publishing. Now, we do have a proposal in the works mandating the printing of Cheese related literature......
Edit: I just visited thirdgeeks NSeconomy calculator and it seems that our major industry is now Arms Manufacturing.

While Yelda has no economic motive for this proposal, The Rogue Nation of Flibbleites, having Beef-based Agriculture as our primary industry, does. Therefore we approve this resolution and hope that it passes.

We have some reservations, but Saint Uriel will support this only because:

1. We REALLY like cheese
2. We have a lot of goat cheese we would like to sell
3. Hopefully, increased cheese sales would lead to increased sales of our wines

Greetings.

We of Roathin have decided that we cannot endorse this proposal as it will wreak economic mayhem while leaving us untouched. After all, as a nett dairy producer, we stand to benefit, although not without a slightly irritated conscience.

This does open the door for a "dump our extra food on poor countries, take a tax write off and feel good about ourselves at the same time" proposal.

We could call it "Food Aid".

This should be free trade. We will not be supporting this proposal

Do we need to carefully consider the definition of 'cheese'?

For example cheese can be said to include the following: Glam rock, Shakin Stevens, knock knock jokes, dallas re-runs, the chuckle brothers, leopard print leotards, interesting toenail dwelling organisms, fake fur car seat covers, the Osmonds, Alvin Stardust, furry dice...etc...

Don't get me wrong, some of the above is class stuff, and appreciators of fine cheese the world over will agree. But unless we agree a cheese definition, then it could be argued that the nutritional value of some forms of cheese is limited, and dairy content questionable?

Sometimes the server does funny things like that. Check with Vastiva, if it was deleted then the proposer is meant to get a TG from the mods.

No telegram, it died naturally - the question being, do we reincarnate it as a Free Trade proposal?

I think so, I recieved a few comments to the effect that it should be Free Trade. Please wait a couple of days though. I'm tired of telegramming.

Not a worry, need to reconfigure it as a Free Trade agreement first and foremost - and that should take a few days.
