Idea for a proposal...

Would anyone be interested in a resolution that makes certain crimes illegal in all UN nations? Obvious one's include
Murder (excluding obvious things such as in war or execution and abortion etc)
Theft (excluding seized evidence and aything anyone else can think of)
Assault (any thoughts on exclusions?)
Peadophilia (as per other UN resolutions)

any thoughts?

I don't know. I personally think that's going a bit far in infringing on a countries sovergnty. You might be able to get it to pass the way the masses vote, but I don't think I would support it. Sorry.

I would agree with Yoopers, this is probably best controlled from a national level.

The thing is that although I think that most people would agree that he black and white cases of murder and theft etc are wrong, they are likely to disgaree on the shades of grey.

When is murder not murder? Abortion? War? Death penalty? Euthanasia? Self-defence? Mental illness? Manslaughter? The list could go on.

I think if you could define each crime you mention at its most basic then it would work. Hell, I think it would work anyway, and most people would support it. But I'm not sure if that would be a good thing.

I guess it would depend how you wrote it?

Well, this may seem odd, but I don't think there should be a resolution like this myself!
It's just that I could say to those who say "OMG like WTF? Diplmoats could go round butchering people!" I could just point them to the section that says that diplomatic immunity must be revoked if they break international law, and then say that if they support this proposal then that would be a problem!

I fully support the diplomat proposal. But the 'OH NOES! TEh DILPOMATS r the terorist black marcket smuglrs!' nay-voters would still half-read the proposal, vote against DDI, post once in the debate thread, and disappear into the night without listening to the reply or changing their vote, so adding a section on international law would not swing them. And if we tried to pass this seperately, the national sovreignity brigade would swing against it, surely?

Well, pedophillia is already outlawed by UN Resolution... the rest are interesting, but not always illegal.
