UN delegates

I've been looking through all of the proposels lately and been wondering about something. For one, why the hell do all of the proposals still need 100+votes? Even the ones that are ending today! Is it that theres no decent proposals around at the moment? Or is it that the UN delegates simply arnt voting or loging on to nation states, therefore, keeping the ammount of votes needed the same but the voters not showing up?

If the later part is true i think the UN would be much more productive if they took a UN member off the UN if they were inactive for five days, unles they are on vacation. I know that the creator of Nation states doesn't take too kindly to people asking him to update the game, but i think alot more things would get done in the UN if what i said were to be put in place.

I'm afraid that they were all written up in a minute, and none of them mention anything worthwhile.

Both. First, proposals in the list are crap. Often people don't even run them throung a word processor first. There just aren't that many good ones. Second, just like in RL, an excellent product isn't going to sell if it isn't advertised. Most proposals on the list do not have telegram campaigns, which means that they're doomed to fail. It's a very capitalist proposal business. No one gives you points for having a good proposal that's unheard of; you have to sell your product, consumers aren't going to sell it for you.

No, I don't think there's anything wrong with the current situation. Telegramming can get all but the most egregiously screwed up proposals to the 150 approval mark before the window closes (ie. the proposal times out). And, even if the proposal is lost because it times out, it can be resubmitted, making finding support that much easier (because you already have a list of delegates incredibly likely to support it--those that supported it last time). I have personally telegrammed successfully for six now-resolutions. Only one had to be resbmitted. The system works if you write good proposals (or, at least, popular sounding proposals) and know how to sell them.

Case n point: "The Global Library". The proposal was no better than the hundreds of others that pass through the proposal list, but it had a good telegram campaign. It passed, illustrating the following:

a proposal's merit =/= a proposal's chance for success

Crappy proposals get the nod that shouldn't, and decent proposals that should be approved are passed over. It's almost exclusively the fault of the proposal author.

True, in your case, especially. Yeah if the author is very willing and knowledgable enough for telegramming, just without the means I' don't think it's his or her fault.

But I don't think that's the case with most proposal authors out there who fail to telegram for their proposals.

I wasn't having a go at you. Just venting my anger at the middle east's inability to grasp the damnably simple concept of decent telephony...

Agreed. Most of the proposals at the moment are crap, Majoraly made up of "make marijuana legal" and Gun laws. But as there were 14 pages of them, and i knew that alot of proposals that have been before have made it to resolutions, I thought it was a regular occurance.

So I guess its good to know that only the well thought out and well advertised proposals make it.

One more question... If you are a UN delegate with 4 endorsments would your approval count more than another delegate who only had 2 endorsments?

No, but if you're the delegate for a large region you get more votes when a proposal reaches quorum

or they are pointless repeals, or they try to repeal every UN proposal that hasnt already been repealed for some reason or another
