Ban UN Embargos and Tariffs
A resolution to reduce barriers to free trade and commerce.

Category: Free Trade
Strength: Significant
Proposed by: Mr Vice

Description: In the interest of national sovreignty, the United Nations is hereby banned from EVER placing an embargo or tariff on any product. Matters regarding the importation and exportation of cargo shall be soley decided upon by the individual national entities.

I enourage all UN Delegates to approve this resolution and help restore the sovreignty of individual nations. Note that this proposal does NOT outlaw tariffs or embargos; it simply brings this option back down to a national level. I would appreciate any thoughts.

I can't imagine the UN ever passing a tariff on a specific item, but... why tie our hands?

Then what means would the UN Security Councel have to bring nations to account for their actions?

Furthermore, tarriff issues are the domain of the WTO, not the UN.

I would reject that proposal.

What "Security Councel?" We don't have one.

Searching databanks for possible relevance...

WTO- World Trade Organization. One of the many pre-Sarkarasetan organizations, the WTO was an organization devoted to international trade. After the United States of America (see topic "Failed Governmental Ideas") of that Earth collapsed during the Second Civil War, the WTO failed to account for massive losses of power by not achieving the interest of the two nations that sprung up from the ashes (see topic "History of Sarkaraset and Sarkaraseta"). Nothing is currently known about the fate of the organization except it is presumed destroyed after that Sol collided with a black sun that had gone previously undetected due to its low gravity and radiation outputs. At this time, only two nations are known to have achieved space travel from that Earth, and both of them are known to have abandoned the planet a full century before the destruction of the system. At this time, no WTO exists in any official capacity on the international scale.

Seems to not exist. Must be the UN's job then.

I would reject that proposal.

For those reasons? You need to reexamine why.

This resolution would still allow for embargos but it would not force all UN members to stop trade if they do not desire to. I agree that tariffs are not for the UN to preside over either. This proposal will prohibit the UN from managing tariffs (since it is not in the UN's domain).

The UN's domain is whatever it decides it to be and that the mods are willing to allow.

I am strongly against this, this wouldn't allow penalties agaisnt countrys that use slave labor or exploition of currency. I know no countrys in the un can have slavry but you can still have un nations not accept things from people.

Many nations in the UN have different views on when to use embargos. Thus, there is already a guarantee that the UN will be divided. This proposal will elimenate the possibility of such confusion and let the ultimate decission go to individual national entities when it comes to making decisions regarding foreign relations.

that makes it alot more interesting, but then the un countries wouldn't be forced to deny things from these countries unless thouse put a tariff or embargo on them.
