UN Proposal: Undersea Dome Initiative

We, the nation of Citalta, feel the need for an Undersea Dome Initiative. The purpose of an Undersea Dome Intiative would be to facilitate the building of a series of undersea domes and the building of a region under the world's oceans. The advantages of this proposal are numerous.

If accepted, this proposal may help fight rising overpopulation. By relocating nations to this undersea region, we have opened up new land to the world. The Undersea Dome Initiative will also boost scientific production by researching deep ocean vents, where mysterious creatures lurk. This may make new products like medicines available.

These same deep ocean vents can provide an endless source of clean energy to the colony. Their great heat and pressure can turn turbines and generate electricity. As they are oxygen-rich, air for breathing can be obtained from the vents aswell.

Our scientists recommend that the Dome Complex be located deep under the southern oceans, where undersea rock is plentiful. This is an optimal building material. Deep sea vents are also available here, which are needed for the project.

As you can see, the proposal's advantages are numerous. Citalta would itself volunteer to begin and represent the region. With global funding via the U.N., the possibilities are endless. The world will truly benefit from such a resolution.

[Please tell me about your ideas, problems, etc. for this proposal. Be kind though, its my first!]

Well first of all, this is NS, not the real world, so don't refer to real world places.

Second, this is a rather poor solution to overpopulation on the land surface of the Earth - you're asking the entire UN to subsidise the creation of massive undersea installations for a few nations, when it would be far cheaper, and less ecologically damaging to encourage people simply to have fewer children and to supply them with contraceptives. In fact, given the number of future-tech nations about, it would probably be more practical to relocate people to the surfaces of other planets - at least there, agriculture would probably be easier, and people would probably feel more comfortable than in enclosed bubbles surrounded by high-pressure water.

As to the science, it certainly isn't necessary to set up bases on this scale to facilitate scientific investigation - in RL, we have a few research stations in the Antartic but no major settlements.

Well, I figured an ocean was ok... I mean, we have the pacific regions.

On the one hand I like the idea of an undersea dome. Except for the part about an underwater earthquake wiping out the city.

On the other hand the costs would be prohibitive.

There's nothing preventing you from locating your nationstate in an undersea dome; just don't ask the rest of us to pay for your RP.

[Well, its not like anyone is actually paying  ]

The costs would be minimal because of the large amount of nations in the UN. Plus, Any nation willing could move to the domes.

There's really no way with our present level of technology to build one that wouldn't be vulnerable to catastrophe.

Much safer to build one in space.

Anyone else have an opinion?

Actually, the tax rates in our nations would go up if we passed that resolution of yours.

I happen to agree with _Myopia_ that while the Undersea Domes are a very nice idea, there are much more practical ways of dealing with overpopulation issues, even if you consider that it is the place of the UN to deal with such issues.

This is interesting and it should be given as much credance as the space issue within the UN. Perhaps though, rather than the massive plan for underwater domed cities, a scaled down scientific research type dome or domes should be considered.
The wealth of the oceans lies untapped and the Venerable Libertarians would fund such an endevour.
