Steel Butterfly complained to the mods about a bunch of nations in my region.
I think it ended up with 50 or a hundred nations getting deleted.

Or maybe it hasn't ended yet, who knows.
Any country with "ass" in its name, in any region got the ax.

all my fault for posting in the UN, apparently.

Steel Butterfly complained to the mods about a bunch of nations in my region.
Let's get this straight, please. Here's the thread in question (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=403139).

A player requested that mods make a ruling on the name Asshelmeta. Other players chimed in with a variety of opinions, including a different player who posted a list of other nations in the same region with possibly illegal names, currencies, animals, flags, and mottos. The moderators considered the request, listened to opinions, discussed it extensively amongst themselves, and made rulings. The net result was that we followed existing policy and removed a number of nations with offensive or illegal names, including a fair number in "The Isle of Lesbos".

With over 130,000 active nations, the moderators don't spot every infraction. That's why we have Getting Help Requests and the Moderation Forum. We expect players to report potential infractions, and Moderators make the ruling. This constant attacking of Steel Butterfly needs to stop right now, YGSM. You took a chance with a nationname that skirted the edge, and you got burned. Don't invite deletion of your current (perfectly legal) nationname by continually singling out a player (who acted properly) for attacks and derision.

A number of your regionmates posted some of the most absurd defenses that I've ever seen. A cartoon penis being described as (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=404226) "the Red Rising Sun of Japan (as in the original Japanese flag), modified with a square shaped piece of brown chocolate to it's left"? Do your regionmates think we're morons? Coupled with the rest of the innuendo-filled mottos, animals, and currencies, it was plain and obvious to anyone over the age of 13 what the intent was. You had the good graces to back out of commenting on that bit of idiocy, and for that I commend you.

Personally, the use of "ass" in most of the nation names I've seen does not bother me in the slightest. That's immaterial. I was offered this position to enforce the policies given to us by Max Barry, and that's what the moderation staff and I all do. It's not personal. It's never personal. Your attempts to make it so (with Steel Butterfly) are not winning converts in Moderation, and I doubt they will win you converts in the UN.

It is interesting that this happened in March 2005, because I remember in December 2004 when you were a newbie and were trying to roleplay with Pilot after the passage of his NS HIV AIDS Act and a number of us brought up the subject of your nation's name to the moderators. They didn't do anything at all then.

In any event, I honestly feel that in your time in the UN forum that you've been very polite and active in UN afairs. I had a minor objection to the name in Dec., but I quickly felt it didn't matter as your activities here have been very positive and I've actually looked forward to your posts.

My recommendation would be to add a note in the FAQs that deletion based on a name might sometimes take a few months to resolve. To me it feels as though the best way for moderators to handle these things is to when the complaint is first registered to say, "We reserve the right to look into this later." In fact, most of them frequently do this.

Actually, Asshelmets was deleted at that time. Other incarnations were not brought to the attention of Moderation staff, or for whatever reason they were not acted on. I was not a mod at the time, but I remembered that the twin offenses were trolling/flaming in the forums, plus an illegal name.

It's true that Asshelmetta has been a productive and helpful member of the UN Forums, and that was mentioned in the Moderation discussion. However, a borderline illegal name, couple with prior warnings / deletions, was enough to push the decision through.

As I recall, you complained about me questioning your manhood for never having been with a prostitute.
I mentioned that to Cog, to no avail.

Pish. Whatever. Maybe my mistake was not starting any mods-only RP threads. Or not having been around as long as Assington.

Frustratingly, I just skimmed the list again, and it looks like he left Asshi, Assidian, Assie, Assilalex, Asskickers, Asskickalotica, Assmunches, Assteca, and no doubt a bunch more untouched. OTOH, there are about 70 fewer than there were a couple days ago.

Whatever. An extra two months before I can submit issues.

You meaning Mikitivity, not Frisbeeteria. Cross-posted.

You never questioned my manhood nor made any references to me and prostitutes in this forum. I think you might be mistaking me for any number of the other proponents of the NS HIV AIDS Act.

My complaint in moderation was in support of others who were complaining about your name and the tone your roleplaying (i.e. the assasination attempts) was taking against Pilot. In particular, you were not only posting in response to him here, but also in the International Incidents forum. It wasn't clear if you were roleplaying or not. When asked to stop, you clarified that you were just roleplaying.

As for submitting issues ... very few of them ever get accepted. But even if it will take a few months, start posting your ideas in the Got Issues forum now. :)

Or not having been around as long as Assington.

That could well be part of it. I think Assington created his nation prior to the ruling on vulgar nation names. As I recall, he got deleted for it but was revived when they realized that he had made the nation before the rule was there.

Asshelmetta once threatened my nation with a nuclear attack. It was over a disagreement of a UN resolution proposal (which I proposed) on birth control. This attracted the attention of the moderators. He admitted his response was out of line and effectively apologised. A cordial relationship has exisisted between our two nations since.

If you want to read about it, look here:Birth Control Resolution (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=391141)

As you can see, the former nation of Asshelmetta has a history of attracting the attention of moderators, in more ways than one.

So, fairwell Asshelmetta. It was you who went before me.

YGSM, it is unfortunately that your nation got deleted. I am still relatively new here, but I have found you to be far more moderate, responsible, and articulate than many on these forums.

I understand your current bitterness, but it will only harm you to complain publicly about the deletion. I, for one, had never made either a negative or "obscene" connection with the name of your prior nation. I do see, however, how it could be perceived otherwise in context of the region and the off-site forum.

Anyway, I am glad you are still with us and hope you will put this behind you. Hang in there.

Adamsgrad, I think your gloating (even tongue-in-cheek) is inappropriate. That is just my opinion, but do not kick someone while they are down.

First, we probably shouldn't be going too much into detail over this here, so I'm going to keep my comments only to material presented in this thread (since I've read the issue in moderation already and am quite familiar with it by now). That said, I find the comment:

Asshelmetta once threatened my nation with a nuclear attack. It was over a disagreement of a UN resolution proposal (which I proposed) on birth control. This attracted the attention of the moderators.

to be completely irrelevant. Moderators don't control roleplay. It's been said at least twenty times on threads that I read (though granted, I read Moderation threads - probably for the same reasons I'm fascinated by explosions). So even if every other post was (word that shall not be used at the beginning of a nation's name)helmetta RPing a nuclear attack, it certainly isn't a violation of either the forum or game rules.

Naturally, I'm not a moderator - at least on these forums.

I am not gloating. I was just pointing to the irony. As I said, after the little cold war between the nation of ASSHELMETTA and Adamsgrad, relations between our two nations were cordial.

I for one, feel there are nations out there who have abused game rules in worse ways and offer my condolescences to the refugees of the former nation.

I must stress that, my borders are only open to people who are prepared to contribute to Adamsgrad's economy. In otherwords, don't think you can just come in here and live of our welfare system.

However, I understand that, in the midst of the turmoil, a new nation has been formed. If that is the case, then it is understood that these refugees should be resetteld and housed there.

You clearly didn't read the thread I provided you with. The incident didn't take place in role play, it took place here, on the forum. The nation of ASSHELMETTA (Oh, how terrible!) threatened to carry it out in the international incident section.

I have to say that, having read the incident again, it is really quite amusing. ASSHELMETTA later edited his posts and said that his threat was a little bit of a joke, you know, like a nuclear attack would do a suitable job of controlling my population growth. Unfortunately myself and the moderator (who accused him of flaming) didn't see the funny side. Adamsgrad's large population proved to be a suitable detterant. He later apologised for the threat, and relations had been cordial up until the destruction of ASSHELMETTA.

Now we have a humanitarian crisis on our hands, with millions of refugees wondering about.

OOC - not a bad idea for roleplay, don't you think? ;)

Don't hold gloating against Adamsgrad, however. A little teasing is completely appropriate. In particular, I have to laud this comment:
