FIRST DRAFT: Repeal of DVD region removal

The Wild Cards
15-02-2005, 02:37
Thoughts...suggestions...different wording is welcomed. I won't submit this until a later date. Just wanted to hear the opinions of everyone else. The resolution would be as follows:

We, the people of the Allied States of the Wild Cards believe UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION #5 “DVD region removal” should be repealed for the following reasons:

1. By having only one DVD region, we risk a global monopoly in this sector of the economy.
2. A DVD company could flood the market with cheap DVD’s and DVD players ruining this major area of many economies.
3. Nations should have the option of requiring DVD regions or having no regions what so ever.
4. Even if the U.N. should feel it should take the time to legislate only having one DVD region, we feel that this resolution should be replaced with a more specific and detailed resolution setting out the benefits of only having one DVD region. We personally do not see it and would like a detailed resolution explain it, if said benefits even exist.
5. The original resolution is poorly worded and does not fit or meet the standards of recent U.N. resolutions. This has been the basis of other repeals as well and should be taken in consideration also.

We realize that the U.N. repeal above is only 145 words; however the original resolution is only 24 words. There is only so much we can talk about. But this is repeal is 6 times longer than the original resolution.

Erummm.... they're talking about the region on the DVD. Meaning a standardization of playability.

I think the only valid justification for this is 'nations rights' and that isn't nearly enough.

Lacking DVD regions does several things:

First, it supports free trade and the spreading of resources. This is a good thing for all nations, because the rich get richer and more powerful and the poor will at least improve their exposure and standard of living, if we prevent exploitation.

Second, the free spread of information is a proven tool to liberalizing abusive governments and should be maintained as such, in addition to being a principle I believe we should support on face.

Third, its simply easier and more cost effective.
