This is a sort of oppinion poll post to see what you all think about nuclear power and to see it there should be a resoloution passed.

I think that nuclear power is the only currently knowen power sorce that can save our planet from the 'global warming effect'. It is a very safe way of producing power as long as saftey rules and common sence is used. The Very small amount of waste that is produced from using nuclear power can be easily stored under-ground where there is almost no chance whatsoever that it will do any harm at all, also any risks caused by any (highly improbable) event is insignificant compaired to the threat of 'global warming'.

Another point I would like to say is that I would like nothing more for renewable energy resorses to be the way to produce the world's power but it simply never can.

1. It is too unpredictable. A small problem but one that causes complications.

2. The energy to make somthing like a wind-turbine for example is more than it can possibly produce in it's entire life-time.

3.The area of land and sea that would have to be covered with renewable energy systems to produce even a part of the world's power uesage is astranomical, as would be the price.

There is a poll so you can see the genral feeling, please vote so we can get a realistic impretion of what you all think. If there is no thread due to me not knowing how to put one in properly please bear with me. ty.

Please discuss.

This should be in General or the UN forum, depending on whether this is for reality or Nationstates.

I think if we used wind power for our source of energy instead of nuclear it would be a safer and better way of producing energy. Nuclear energy has it's con's but really wind power does not, besides the fact that you need alot of mills to power a country, but with the right technology we could get around it!

Well. The fact you'd need to cover the entire of the UK to power a 1/4 of it or something like that makes this idea a bit flawed...

Just stick to the ol' fossil fuels. We'll all be long gone before it makes any real problems.... ;)

You are right...but I prefer to make the world of my great grandsires a good place to live in...and with the right technology I think we could do that...the good technology being...windpower!

And you have studied the "downwind" effects, right?

Which nuclear power do you mean. Fission or Fusion. By the nature of the disscusion I would assume you mean the conventional fission.
I am still awaiting the very soon day of fusion.

Unfortunately, I misunderstood the poll when I voted. I thought it was asking if nuclear weapons were good...so I voted no.

As for nuclear power...I would have voted yes, because, as you pointed out, it is relatively safe (assuming you know what you're doing and take all necessary precautions) and generates a large amount of power. The main downside is what to do about nuclear waste.

As for fission vs. fusion, fusion power would be fantastic. If we had the technology, we could kiss our energy problems goodbye (assuming that energy corporations wouldn't erect some sort of legal barriers using their ridiculous political influence). That still seems many years away from being practical, though.

i think that nuclear power could be dangerous, yes it is okay if you know what you are doing, but what would happen if something went wrong a large area could be in danger and even the world might be destroyed.

i agree that fusion power would be an amzing sort of energy we would never have any energy problems again.

everyone would be able to have a source of energy in their houses.

while i have nothing against nuclear energy, please consider the following:

Of the total solar energy the earth receives, wind, waves, and ocean currents make up 1.9% of that total. Currently, the total world energy consumption is only 0.005% of the total solar energy which the earth receives. Ocean energy has enormous potential: 1/10 of the energy from 1/10 of the world's oceans would be enough to power the world 3 times over.

i forget the specific sites i found this data from, but a quick google query should turn up similar numbers

OOC: Careful with this sort of thing. In NS we are not bound by modern technology. Most nations play at modern tech level or just in front of it. As such, many nations will have Nuclear Fusion (I assume you're talking about Fission) - I do. This is not to say that this sort of resolution is wrong, but you need to think carefully about what you propose.

So what kind fo thing should we propose, if any?
The Caloris Basin

Stupid work computer... stupid mouse... I ment to vote 'yes'...

The Caloris Basin is completely and entirely in favor of nuclear power. All of our solar plants would never work if it wasn't for the sun's nuclear reactions. And, of course, us being so freaking close to that seething chaos. Still, we're completely in favor of nuclear power.

Besides, if y'all blow youselves up, it won't make a lick of difference to me.
