NEW PROPOSAL: "Arts for Children!"

Redundant Principles
10-01-2005, 01:16
I recently submitted a proposal to the United Nations. Here is my proposal:

"The education of this world's children is a paramount issue. However, whilst debating this subject, far too many simply refer to the old days' policy of "The Three R's". These people do not see the importance of the arts.

By arts it is meant as music, painting, poetry. It is a scientific fact that young people who are learned and/or excel in these subjects score significantly better on standardized tests, are able to perform multiple tasks more efficiently, and are able to lead more productive, prosperous lives.

At the same time, emphasis on the arts can also serve as an easier way to curb young people away from violence. Instead of having a gun put into their hands, why not a violin or a paint brush?

In conclusion, I propose that the United Nations pass a resolution making it a priority in the member nations to fun and promote education in the arts."

Any feedback/support is greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,
Patrick O'Sweeney

Should be interesting.

Reading, riding, and racing? No, seriously, who came up with the name "The Three R's?"

Not an issue with your proposal, but with a cultural practice.

By arts it is meant as music, painting, poetry. It is a scientific fact that young people who are learned and/or excel in these subjects score significantly better on standardized tests, are able to perform multiple tasks more efficiently, and are able to lead more productive, prosperous lives.

Not necessarily. I'll have to ask for evidence on this one, as all I have seen is science suggest this is true without actually providing the evidence that truly proves it. For one thing, I question what groups they are using and whether those groups are truly representative of everyone involved in arts. I've known plenty of people who are geniuses in one area of art that totally fail those tests.

At the same time, emphasis on the arts can also serve as an easier way to curb young people away from violence. Instead of having a gun put into their hands, why not a violin or a paint brush?

Because they're going to be holding said gun when they grow up anyway in my nation. Violence is what my entire nation is based on and how its economy is set up to run. It comes with being a militaristic nation.

In conclusion, I propose that the United Nations pass a resolution making it a priority in the member nations to fun and promote education in the arts."

I would, but first I need a formal education system. Education is pretty much free and equal in my nation for a reason.

What are you doing to my tax structure, here?

I have only given it a cursory glance and I have to say it seems pretty good. Regardless of the evidence (whether it does do good or not) the way I have seen a lot of schools going is teaching people just what they need to get by, and to find a good job. Which is fine, but what do they do when they are not at work and have no appriciation for the "finer" things in life (for want of a better phrase).

And without proper grounding in music, art and poetry, we run the risk of a society's culture grinding to a halt with nothing new being produced and it existing merely on the ancient stuff already in existance.

But eh - what do I know?

*ahem*

I really hate that this came out as a "Significant" impact item.

Making art teaching a "priority" means de-emphasizing everything I've decided is a priority through these silly Issues that come up.

Could you change the language on that? Like, request and recommend that arts education gets equal funding to pre-collegiate sports, or some such?

So we can give funding to people who are taught that winning is everything and screw the little guy in the same way we give money to people who set out to entertain, enlighten, educate and generally try to make life better?

Good plan. Can we also have funding for atom-bomb juggling classes too, as that is severely under funded as a passtime by schools.

I can't support anything with this type of 'evidence'.

Although the intention is noble the execution is lacking. We may support a re-write.

The occasionally Commonwealth of Ile-Rien is very much interested in this resolution and would endorse it (as our nation is filled with those who follow the arts, as is the current PM), however we do agree that a more detailed resolution would not only look better but fit the standards of the UN. After all, one of the reasons the Legalize Prostitution is being repealed is because it is too vague.

That would be an excellent first step, but in the end, pre-collegiate sports will not further your culture. What is more important, a culture known only for teams duking it out across a field or a culture that will be known throughout the world and go down in history as one of the most enlightened cultures on the earth?
