Has the United Nations passed the geneva convention? Perhaps we could have a sign up option for it? See which nation are good and well evil.

If the NS UN wants to go about drafting a Geneva Convention... then, it must start from scratch and be very careful not to copy the original document.

the Wolfish Convention on POW was like the geneva convention:

Do you mean because of the copying rule?

If so, I always thought that meant you can't copy another players proposal or resolution. I've felt that as long as there are no real world references that we can use real-life documents as guidelines.

In either case, unless there is a city named Geneva in our world, we would have to be careful to stay consistent with existing NS Resolutions and to remove real world places.

There was a thread in moderation about this subject this past Fall. I'll see if I still have it subscribed. :)

Ok, I hereby launch the Higson Convention, after one of my cities, who is up for signing it?

That is the right idea! :)

Now you need to post the actual text of the Higson Convention. Make sure it doesn't duplicate (too much) existing NationStates Resolutions / Coventions / Accords / Protocols.

The two that are the most similar to the real life Geneva Conventions would be our:

Wolfish Convention on POW
Eon Convention on Genocide

Notice I called the Geneva Conventions plural. Most people forget that there are a series of Geneva Conventions. (If there is a political capital of the world, Geneva might be the place.)

http://www.genevaconventions.org/

When you look at that site you'll notice that we've not covered some of the provisions in the Geneva Conventions. :)

In English, there are a host of things that the Wolfish and Eon Conventions missed that are just waiting for some enterprising nation to promote in NS.

However, there are other notable resolutions worth taking not of:

Children in War (sometimes called the Sydia Protocol by the IRCO)
Elimination of Bio Weapons
Banning the Use of Land-Mines

In fact, in Miervatia Mikitivity there is a Pacific regional headquarters for the United Nations Association, which has a very useful UN Resolution subject index:

http://s3.invisionfree.com/UN_Organizations/index.php?showtopic=33

Though incomplete, this index should give nations an idea of what sort of UN laws already exist.

If you do this, be careful not to incorporate any of the mistakes of the additional protocols to the fourth geneva convention - legitimization of terrorism, etc.

No joke - there are reasons the United States never agreed to those protocols.

Ok I will write a basic convention and then other bits can be added to it. Give me a few days and I will start a new thread.

The Higson Convention will only apply to conflicts were both beligerents are signatories?

Ah. If it is going to be a resolution, it will apply to EVERYONE in the UN whether they agree with it or not.

Which might put some people off.

(OOC I guess)

The French Resistance were terrorists in World War II

The Rebels were terrorists in Star Wars.

(Back in character)

If your nation has been occupied and invaded, would you just sit by and let it happen, or would you take every meassure available to ensure that you free your people?

Most of my original government were terrorists - that is how we freed TilEnca from the Church of The Lords. And I think that most people now accept our government as a legitimate group, rather than one that should be locked up for our crimes.

Terrorism is not always bad you know - and there are a lot of groups out there that are fighting for freedom from oppression and tyranny. But the people they are fighting against have labeled them terrorists, so that no one will support them. Propaganda at its best.

Same with us. And I am proud to say I was one of those terrorists.

I'm glad to see someone has picked up the torch on the Geneva Convention.

When I "wrote" the Wolfish Convention on POW I had to skip large sections of the RL version in order to fit the limited space for NS resolutions.

There are also the RL Hague Conventions that have never been touched here (to my limited knowledge).

I wish you luck on this project...and don't worry too much - the Wolfish Convention passed easily. Just write it well and people will see the merit.
