Delegates,

Please consider the following proposal, respectfully submitted on December 26, 2004:
------
WHEREAS: If the United Nations so chooses to pass this proposal, a new mission will be put before the civilized world: The Mars 2012 project. The project will make it optional for nations to join a group that shares space-related technology and information to be able to build a ship that will go to Mars by the year 2012 (the crew will compose of 4 members of the two biggest contributors, 8 in all.) These crewmembers, though, go to represent all of Earth, not just their home nations.

CLAUSE: If the ship destined for Mars gets destroyed, an investigation must be conducted by the United Nations and all of the contributor nations into the destruction, and the Mars project must be started back up as soon as possible.

<Ahem>

You realise that there are a lot of nations on Mars already, right?

Heh... because that argument worked so well when the UN flew Bubs' stand TO THE MOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOON!

Well, I am going to vote against that...none of you get to go to Mars...you are all staying here on this Prison Planet...now get back to work and quit b!tching and moaning, this a perfectly fine planet.

Alternate Realities...possibly... ;-)

I have voted yes, but I would want much more information before I make a decision...it is far to vague at the moment.

as you stated it here, you will only do something if the ships gets destroyed... what DO you wanna do on Mars, what is the purpose of this journey, why would someone vote in favour just so they can give money to this project without knowing the purpose of it... are you planning to colonise the planet? or are you gonna make it one of our defense grids from an alien invasion? or do you just wanna take home some rocks? please inform me about this...

While I have no problem with this, I would advise against going to Mars right now without permission. Several Earth Nations and several nonEarth nations have already colonized it, and some of those colonies are currently separate nations. Just deciding to up and visit is about as courteous as me deciding to park one of my ships on your front lawn. And it's likely to get the same reaction.

Try contacting them first (please remember the time lag) before up and going to Mars.

The purpose of the mission is:

1. Scientific-soil samples, biological research, ~alien life~

2. To unite the world and make scientific information sharing easier.

3. To end, once and for all, the space race.

4. To be able to look into building an Earth base on Mars where we can launch ships from and use as the HQ for a trip to a farther planet.

1) You don't need to look for alien life on another planet. Alien life visits Earth on a regular basis. Try looking at the massive numbers of ships in orbit above your own planet. DLE happens to be included in the alien life category.

And if you want soil samples, ask the nations already on Mars for it. If they weren't there, I would have begun terraforming the planet to be a military base already.

2) Won't happen. Humanity is stuck in vastly different levels of technology and, frankly, has shown that not even space can unite it. If anything, space is fought over even more than territory on Earth is.

3) Won't happen. Once you get to space, you begin an arms race and a land grab. All nations do it at first. Plus, you have to compete with the variety of cultures already in space, many of whom have been there long enough to be able to drown out all of your attempts with surperior technology, experience, and resources.

4) I know of one already on Mars. I know of one already on Pluto. It's nothing new.

While this is actually a good idea, you must stop and consider the fact that you are far from the first to attempt this and that this area is flooded with people who got there long before you did.

You want to know what you are facing in the Sol system? Earth alone has orbital platforms, orbital colonies, orbital mine fields, and more ships travelling to and from it than the oceans of Earth will ever have in them. Mars is colonized by multiple countries, one country has colonized Pluto while another has a listening station there, and you don't even want to know about the other planets and the massive amounts of junk orbitting most of the these planets or littering the asteroid belt.

Once you get into space, you get into the realm of the FT nations and must contend with us. We've been here longer, have more experience, and quite a few of us won't hesitate to shoot down things that get in our way (lose a couple of satellites recently?). If you're going to create a program to go to any planet in the Sol system, you must deal with the fact people have done it many times before you and the possibility people may be living there. The inhabitted planets of Sol do not number one by a long shot.

There are nations on every planet, and most every moon, in Sol. Mars even has its own off-site forum and planetary government.

I agree with DemonLordEnigma, try uniting the world by creating world peace or something, not going to Mars...

First off I would vote if I could, and if there was more detail to it. I would not vote for it right now as it is written. I would want more detail on how it will be carried out financially. Will some countries bear more of the economic burden then some, obviously some countries can spend more then others.

Also, what if due to the investigation found out there was sabotage or something, there seems to be no provision on how to deal with this possible scenario.

I like the basic idea, and I applaud the iniative. :):) I just think this needs to be fleshed out some more and be more detailed thats all.

I know how to unite the world...we can trick the sheep into believing there is an impending Martian invasion coming....and if they don't get their act together the Martians will come here and kidnap all their women...we can get Jerry Bruckheimer or that guy who made E.T. (whathisname?) to produce some fake footage of the "Martians" attacking an Earth shuttle or we can blow up some backwoods village and blame the "Martians" and then we can broadcast it all over the worldl...now that is a plan.

Please. If you're going to do that, get some real aliens to drop a real weapons of mass destruction on a real nation and then speed off towards Mars.

Sadly, I'm full-up on my genocides for the moment (check my factbook link in my sig, but remember it's two genocides short).

I seriously hope that in NS2, that there can be a common "baseline" or several independent games, while UFOs, Vulcans, Ewoks, Elves, zombies, Dragons, and Harry Potter are fun, there isn't a UN resolution that can't be better addressed by a bit of god ... I mean creative story telling. Because we all know that we can't have enough of these:

Whales in danger? Why that is silly? My "Cloud City" Cloning Tanks have been teleporting from galaxy to galaxy dropping perfectly suitable whales from our environmentally friendly cloning tanks ... they run on love and porn (one of which is freely available on the intraweb). In fact the blubber from these whales cures HIV and AIDS -- either of them. ;)

And that's part of why you only see me make the cloning offer once. Besides, it turns out they have a nasty tendency to mutate into semisentient man-eating monsters out to destroy all life that isn't part of their species if exposed to a certain enzyme.

Have I mentioned my AIs have twisted senses of humor?
