Repeal "Disease Free" Res #9

I have laid out several reasons why this resolution is not a good resolution. One of the most important is it's irrelevance (see ethno-centristic). It is not appropriate for one nation to tell the members of another nation what is a proper standard of hygiene. Handing out free showers, toilets, washbasins, and bathtubs is not only arrogant, but could also be considered bigoted. I need UN delegates to support this repeal.

Repeal "Keep The World Disease-Free!"
A proposal to repeal a previously passed resolution

Category: Repeal
Resolution: #9
Proposed by: NewNarnia

Description: UN Resolution #9: Keep The World Disease-Free! (Category: Human Rights; Strength: Significant) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: Whereas each nation is sovereign,

Whereas hygiene standards cannot be mandated in a household,

Whereas individual rights have been infringed upon by R #9,

Whereas a free toilet, shower, bathtub, washbasin, and vaccine should not be concidered a human right any more than a free fillet mignon should be concidered the same,

Whereas it is the responsibility of each individual to purchase or craft and mantain his or her own personal property,

Whereas the member states have different standards of living,

Whereas this resolution is a bigoted, ethno-centristic view of the world,

Resolution #9 handing out free toilets, washbasins, showers, and vaccines shall be rendered null and void.

Approvals: 2 (Immortallia, The Dancing Butterfly)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 144 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Sat Dec 25 2004

I guess handing out free toilets, showers, and sinks encourages unreasonable sprawl and increased water use.

Free vaccines is not good food the medical industry. Also, if they are free, then then demand jumps unreasonably. It is good to be vaccinated, but unnecessary or over vaccination increases bacterial evolution, and creates needs for new vaccines. But, if they are free, there is not incentive for the development of new vaccines. Unless the plan was to backdoor government ownership of pharmeceutical companies.

At least, that is how I would look at it if repealing the resolution.

Where does it say they are free?

UNITED NATIONS RESOLUTION #9
Keep The World Disease-Free!

A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Category: Human Rights

Strength: Significant

Proposed by: Fallopian Tube

Description: While the hygiene standards of the world has certainly improved in the last 100 years, there is more to be done.

Every citizen in every land should have the right to:

At least one toilet in their house;
At least one washbasin in their house;
At least one of either a bathtub or a shower;
in order to comply with hygiene standards and prolong life expectancy.

Furthermore, vaccinations should be made available to the public, although they don't have to be mandatory.
Vaccinations against the big diseases such as:
Malaria, typhoid, rubella, cholera, polio, et al.

With the backing of the UN, we can give even our poorest inhabitants a nice, clean, healthy life.

Votes For: 16,212
Votes Against: 3,020

Implemented: Mon Apr 14 2003

So basically because you think that people who can't afford a shower will feel insulted if they get one, you are willing to stop ensuring people can get vacinations against all sorts of horrifying diseases?

Good for you. It's about time someone stomped on all this "curing diseases crap". How are the rich ever going to feel good about themselves until all of the poor are lying in the gutter, smelly, unclean and dying.

(It's possible that last part might have been sarcastic)

No where does it say you get free anything. It just says you ensure every house has one. So when we build houses, we ensure that there are bathrooms and showers and toilets in them. People still have to buy/rent the house - they don't get it for free.

I suggest that you have totally misrepresented the original resolution, or totally misunderstood it. And that by repealing it you are going to take the NS member states back to the dark ages.

(If you had not worked it out, I am not supporting you on this)

(edit)

Also - where have individual rights been infringed? There is nothing in this resolution that says the nation has to enforce the hygene standards - just provide something so that people can comply. I do not go round ensuring every person in my nation takes a bath or a shower at least once a day, nor do my police officers.

Seriously - you have misunderstood this resolution in the way you are suggesting it should be applied, and because you think a toilet is not a right, you are willing to permit governments the right to withold vacinations to people. Is that really the way to make the world a better place?

To add, the Resolution passed 16,000 to 3,000, a 13,000 vote margin. You're in over your head in trying to Repeal this one.
