Proposal ~ Maximum price limit

Doesn't everyone agree that prices are too high? If every item that was sold in any UN country was sorted into a band and that band had a maximum price limit on it, monopoly induced prices would fall to a reasonably low price. This would make most people happier.

Yea, but it would mean that the governments would get less money from it! Can't have that!

I can't see this working on an international scale. If country A produces oranges then they are going to be cheaper then in country B where they have to be imported.

Want to bet on that?

The price of something is determined by what people are willing to pay for it. If you start putting maximum prices on things then you are going to destroy free trade, bankrupt quite a lot of the world's markets and generally not make things any better for anyone.

AP likes natural monopolies. They exist because they are capable of providing a good at the lowest price.

It is not likely that prices would not fall. Odds are prices would artificially inflate to the maximum. Then decline after observing the effects of new demand if applicable.

Price caps, as well as price floors, are a bad idea, in my opinion.

This disrupts freely controlled prices, not to mention a supply shortage.

And what exactly are you planning to put a price cap on?

I believe that could be considered an act of war. ;)

Too much work and bureaucracy required, impractical, doesn't take into account economic differences, no explanation of how prices would naturally fall, doesn't take into account costs and what kind of margin the retailer needs to balance his books, in a word, no.

Well, if essentials (housing, food, water, medicine) had their prices capped that may be worth it, but I believe other Resolutions cover this cap.
