Protection of the Ocean

Our Oceans are suffering. And I am disappointed to see that the U.N. has not made any proposals regarding the prevention of environmental degradation. We have to take action.

1. Create some kind of international effort to protect the oceans.

The International community should:

2. Create Marine protected areas (prohibited to fishers and tourist developers.) MPAs (http://www.oceansatlas.org/servlet/CDSServlet?status=ND0yNjM2JmN0bl9pbmZvX3ZpZXdfc2l6ZT1jdG5faW5mb192aWV3X2Z1bGwmNz1lbiY2MT0qJjY1PWtvcw ~~)
3. Protect Coral reefs from further damage by fishers, tourists, divers etc…Coral Reefs (http://www.cbc.ca/stories/2003/02/23/coralreefs_wwf030223)
4. Ensure better responses to oil spills by creating an oil spill response team. Oil Spill Response (http://www.oceanfutures.org/features/2003/dispatch_01_03_b.asp)
5. Invest in Ocean research and marine biotechnology Technology (http://europa.eu.int/comm/research/envsc/eurocean12.html)
6. Protect habitats from invasive species. Invasive Species (http://www.eco-pros.com/invasive_non-native_species.htm)
7. Enforce better coastal/port management. Coast Management (http://www.yoto98.noaa.gov/facts/cdevel.htm)
8. And most importantly, prevent overexploitation of marine natural resources (overfishing, deep sea mining). Overexploitation Solutions (http://www.oceans.gov.au/issues_paper_4/page_006.jsp)

Ocean pollution greatly affects the species which live in it. If a species goes extinct, it causes an imbalance in the marine food chain which further causes a chain reaction of extinctions. I believe this can cause the extinction of Human beings as well. We have to take action. Ocean Protection (http://www.environmentaldefense.org/article.cfm?contentid=2501)

*This is my proposal to the U.N. However I dont have enough endorsements to actually submit this proposal to the U.N.

I am sorry if I my proposal is totally wrong. I am new to this game and I am still trying to get the hang of things.

Anyways, just tell me what you all think about this proposal

There are plenty of 'protect the oceans' and 'protect the environment' resolutions already passed...check out the stickies.

Really? I did a search on the forums and U.N. proposals list but I couldnt find anything.

Oh well... I guess I am not going to propose this after all...sorry for wasting your time, I was just trying to participate. *sigh

Don't be downhearted or discouraged!!!

If you look at the list of proposals already passed (listed at the top of this forum), you might find something that is either not covered, or not completely covered.

And you should feel proud of yourself - a fair number of UN members never even bother to come here to read all this, let alone make a proposal.

So - like I said - don't be down hearted that you picked one that was already covered - just keep trying until you find something that is worthwhile and not already in existance.

The ocean is a big place. Even if every nation under the blue sky had an oil response team, how are they supposed to act if a tanker goes down smack dab in the middle of the sea? By the time they got there, whatever damage it could have caused is done.

My Proposal regarding Oceans and global warming kind of covered points 1 and 5...but I like what you are saying.

With a little more explanation regarding each point - I would happily endorse this.

There is a link besides each point which should be able explain better than i ever could.

Then you need to work on figuring out a way to explain it before submitting. Even if links worked in UN proposals (they don't), you can't use RL examples in NS proposals.

Unfortunately - the majority of NS users (me included) are far too lazy to readthrough multiple webpages searching for relevant information.

And still others have slow dial-up connections (like me) and don't want to have to wait for the pages to load.
