Proposed Granbian Summit on Abortion.

Granbia

-Granbian President takes the floor-

"My fellow United Nations Allies, throughout my limited time in this organization, it has come to my attention that there is a divide running down this room. The divide isn't very deep. It isn't very wide. But it is getting bigger as we speak. We can walk over it now, but soon we'll have to jump, and in the end, no one will even attempt to make the journey across the ravine. Our nations are at war with eachother over the issue of abortion.

Yes, there is a current resolution that upholds the rights to abortion. It is my position that this resolution fully represents only some of the members of this organization, while it somewhat represents many, and misrepresents many as well. It is clear throughout the list of proposals week after week that there are many who are voicing their dissent on this topic. It is our belief that after some period of time, the movement against this resolution will gain enough strength to have it repealed, and then........ then there will be no abortion rights guaranteed whatsoever.

There has to be some middle ground that may be found.

Many of the complaints against the current abortion rights resolution come from the view of National Sovereignty. Whether this body has the right to impose this strong of a moral issue upon nations is strongly debatable. Many who support the abortion resolution now, because of their agreement with the issue, may come to see the debate, however, as one not to be dealt with by an international body, but by their own nation, and seak to overturn it.

Governments run through religious channels; countries run with strong moral convictions; these are the nations that are being repressed by this resolution. Their right to govern their own country as their citizens voice has been taken, and that is not a right that I wish to see this body remove from any nation.

-Speaker pauses for a sip of water-

Almost all nations, whether on the right side of the divide, or on the left, will agree that they understand the arguements of the other side, they just don't agree with the arguements themselves. Most are ready to compromise, some willing to listen, others looking for just that one thing that will help them decide.

My fellow Nations, before this divide grows into a trench, and that trench into a ravine, let us fill it back in. It won't look like the marble floor we all stand on and walk on together, it will still be difficult to walk over, but it will be patched, and for it this body will be the stronger.

This is what Granbia proposes:

That there shall be a Summit on Abortion held in Granbia.

That the summit shall last two earthweeks (14 days), January 2nd thru January 16th

That the topics of Abortion and Rape Cases, Abortion and Endangered Mothers, Abortion and Morality, and Abortion and National Sovereignty be debated in a civilized manner in a single place, and the spirit of compromise be in affect.

That after the two week period, a repeal of the current resolution be put forth by the members of this summit, if that is what is agreed upon, and a New Proposal that guarantees abortion rights under specific circumstances (Rape/Mother Endangerment), while leaving the moral basis to the individual nation, be introduced by the members of this summit, if that is what is agreed upon.

Every UN Nation and Regional Delegate is hereby invited to take part in these debates and polls. The end result with be a democratic representation of all members.

After some debate, the Granbian Senate will introduce a Repeal Resolution and a Proposal Resolution based on the majority of opinions of the members. Everyone's voice will count. Amendments to these resolutions may be brought to the floor by regional delegates, as well as UN members with over 500 posts in this venue, and voted on by these delegates and members. Delegates will also have their own private debating rooms, to debate on whichever abortion topics they see fit.

This is the venue for the summit:

Granbian Summit on Abortion (http://granbia.proboards39.com/index.cgi)

Doors are locked until the beginning of the summit, but suggestions to adapt the venue are welcome on that venue's message system. Please register for this summit now, so that your places may be reserved and ready, and the true spirit of this organization will spring forth.

I urge you, NSUN Nations, to let your voice be heard. Don't let the rights of endangered mothers and rape victims fall from the law. Don't let your own nation's morals be inflicted upon. Let your voice be heard, and we will, my friends, fill that divide.

Thank You"

I would advise holding it in orbit over Terrator. The location is remote, unmappable, and protected by multiple cannons and multiple fleets. If anyone wants to sabotage it, they'll have a hard time finding it and an even harder time actually attacking without dying.

....so no one is actually up for a productive compromise summit?...... Wow. I guess if you have to have it your way, you can all just go on ahead fighting to the death....

Respectfully Submitted....of course

Like it (and the forum board)

Also, can an option looking at the implications of abortion to fatherhood be added to the agenda?

I'm willing to attend. Any attempt at compromise has New Tyrollia's full support. But we respectfully wonder if perhaps a summit on National Soverignty, and how far the UN should really go in it's resolutions is in order. Is that not partially what this entire debate touches upon? And in ignoring this important aspect, do we not open ourselves up to future rifts over similarly contentious topics?
Granbia

Yes, I largely believe that that is the real issue in many of the proposal/resolution problems. However, resolutions that clearly go beyond the powers of the UN slip through no matter what we really do. It's more of a game mechanics/mod opinion matter. So, maybe in tackling this issue singularly, we can get a lot of the delegates and members to start thinking more about the national sovreignty issue.

Is there any news organizations that I might incorporate the help of to advertise?

The resolutions that go beyond the powers of the UN have been deleted already. The rest that are left are well within the UN's powers. This UN is capable of far more than the real one.

Well, I've dropped out of the UN in protest to this very issue. I will, however, attend a summit like this one and rejoin if I like the resolution.

My offer of a secure location is still on the table. Not everyone gets to get past the defense of my orbital platforms alive. Plus, in that location you'll get a neutral territory (the workers can't understand you and the AIs don't care).

Fass sees no need for compromise on this issue. The current resolution is in line with our policies and we will not give credence to its detractors by giving their moralist agenda any sort of consideration. Womens' rights are far too important for that.

Hence, the Royal Ministry of Health and the Royal Ministry of Foreign Affaires jointly decline your invitation, and regret that they will not have the chance to visit Terrator, which is obviously lovely any time of year.

Representatives from the region "Change" will be in attendance. This seems like a very good plan. That is, if people actually participate and don't sit on their tookus (not mentioning any names....Fass)

Since my nation is no longer in the UN, and since I have championed many pro-life bills, I feel I should host the summit, and offer my services.

....so no one is actually up for a productive compromise summit?

Considering the only issue this summit should address is whether or not abortion is a national or international issue, I'd say productive compromise is out of the question.

DLE, your offer of a secure location is very much appreciated, however I hesitate to move the location. The lush forests and rolling hills of Granbia will be picturesque and very secure, although a presence of some of your forces in the sky would be very welcome.

It has come to my attention that many members have left the UN for the reason of this legislation alone. Therefore, Non-UN members will also be welcome to the summit and to debate, but flamebaiters will be barred.

I hesitate to hand over control of this summit, Lagonia, but will need several Co-Sponsors to help regulate the event. Would you (anyone) be interested in assisting?

As for those who are opposed changing the legislation..... Don't you think that for this very reason you should come to the summit?....... If it's just for one group of single minded persons, we won't get as much out of it.

Thank you for all of your interest,

I fear the problem is just as the respected delegate from Tuesday Heights has pointed out. As long as this is the 'Granbian Summit on Abortion', the only members it will truly seem to attract are those who favor a repeal of the Resolution in question. Unless it addresses some larger issue, or presents some new alternative, I doubt a truly equal discussion will occur. Otherwise, it might as well be 'The Granbian Headcount of Those Against Abortion', as unfortunate as that would be.

I'm trying to be as bi-partisan as I am able, although it is understood that more nations will be persuaded to attend that are wanting to change the current legislation than those who wish to keep it the same. However, I wish to challenge those who wouldn't come because of their content with the current legislation: Would you really want all of the nations that are opposed to this resolution, whether for moral issues or National Sovereignty, to be gathered in one place to propose legislation without giving your opinions in the matter? This Summit is for ALL nations, whether FOR the current resolution or AGAINST. Yes, it will attract nations that are against the resolution on a larger scale, but I am petitioning for an equal voice. A good compromise cannot be reached without the voices of all sides heard.

As for this summit not changing anything major, I think that it will set a VERY notable precident. A veteran resolution could be overturned on the basis of National Sovereignty, which is a key debate at this Summit. Possibly even a larger precident would be a veteran resolution being overturned on the basis of the morality of member nations, which is also a key debate at this summit. You will note that the venue covers several categories for debate, not Just National Sovereignty or Just Moral Issues. The current resolution may not even be challenged, just a new proposal submitted. It's up to EVERYONE.

I will continue to ask all to attend and this summit will begin on Jan 2nd, whether there are more voices for one side or the other, though an equal representation would be optimal.

Please take a moment and register for the summit, no matter which side you will be debating,
