Here is the proposal for encouraging GM foods, a good, efficient method of augmenting our current foods with better qualities.

Genetically Modified Foods

A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.
*

Category: Human Rights

Strength: Significant

Proposed by: Helicari

Description: OBSERVING: That...

a) ...Genetically modified foods are pest resistant, rot resistant, and disease resistant.

b) ...Genetically modified foods can provide greater nutritional value, and grow to be much larger from the same amount of plantings.

c) ...Genetically modified food can provide much needed nutrition in one type of food, and support the nutritional needs of many thousands of people.

d) ...Genetically modified plants and animals can breed with non-GM plants and animals, and disrupt the environment.

e) ....Some people do not like to eat GM foods for various reasons, being health related, or on principle.

PROCLAIMING: That Genetically Modified foods should be legalized and promoted throughout the world as a safe and effective method of gaining greater flavor, nutritional value, and yield from a crop of human consumable food...

BUT

a) GM food must be labeled with a label containing what has been changed about the food, and what pros and cons it has, approved by the UN Counsel on GM Foods.

b) All GM foods must pass through a review board made up of scientists and other members of the UN Counsel on GM Foods.

c) Care must be taken to prevent GM organisms from procreating with non-GM organisms. Random farm inspections by the UN Counself on GM Foods will be cumpulsory. Farms that do not comply will be shut down.

Approvals: 2 (JS Nijmegen, WZ Forums)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 139 more approvals)

Voting Ends: Sat Dec 4 2004

Seems like a fairly good idea. Just four quick comments.

First of all, we'll need a working definition of a GM food somewhere. This shouldn't be too hard.

a) GM food must be labeled with a label containing what has been changed about the food, and what pros and cons it has, approved by the UN Counsel on GM Foods.

Well, there are hundreds of different species in the UN, each with different health standards. So that's going to be one long label.... and does this mean its illegal to sell or give away GM food before it goes through the labeling process? What about a farmers' market?

b) All GM foods must pass through a review board made up of scientists and other members of the UN Counsel on GM Foods.

If my resolution on Potentially Dangerous Food passes, maybe the UN FAO can handle this! :) (shameless plug)

c) Care must be taken to prevent GM organisms from procreating with non-GM organisms. Random farm inspections by the UN Counself on GM Foods will be cumpulsory. Farms that do not comply will be shut down.

I don't like the random farm inspections. I mean really don't like them. We've got laws against search and seizure in my Republic and random inspections by a foriegn body violates that.
