The TRUE purpose of the "United Nations"

First off, put me on the record... this is ME and not "Faalcon" talking here. Trust me, you don't wanna know what my alter ego has to say about this subject.

Now then, what is the purpose of this United Nations? SERIOUSLY! We need to stop a moment and think about that, the reason "NationStates" is here and the whole reason for this website.

Take a look at the current resolution being "debated." Have you EVER.... EVER read anything more generalized in all your life??? Come on! Resolutions are (from Webster's Dictionary): " a formal expression of opinion, will, or intent voted on by an official body or assembled group."

What is the formal opinion of the current resolution supposed to do? It has as much substiance as "The U.N. is hereby resolved to be nice to one another, so there... nyah!"

I bring all this up because proposed legislation before the "U.N." should have some MEAT to it! Give it substance! Give it teeth! Make it worthy of debate! None of this... "everyone is equal, no one is better than another, lets all hold hands crossing the street and play nice and share your toys... blah blah blah."

Am I really the only one that feels this way?

Vote down this "resolution" and I PROMISE I'll come up with a really good one within the week! Come on, people! Let's dig deep and have some fun with this!!!

I don't think there's much chance of it being voted down. The UN like huggy, feely resolutions like this.

But your offer to come up with a proposal of your own is taken. We're always interested for good and new proposals (well, most of us are). If you disagree with a previous resolution I suggest you try a repeal. I offer my help with advertising, if I agree with the proposal and if it's well-written.

The short list of resolutions riper-than-others for repeal:

40 hour work-week
Legalize Prostitution
Legalize Euthanasia
'this new one' (though it might be best to wait for a time to let supporters die down a little)

If you are only addressing this to the current proposal, there is already a thread about it, and generally it is good practice to stick to existing threads.

If you are talking about the NSUN in general, then it is not the sole purpose of this game. It is a tiny part of it.

UN membership is not compulsary. Indeed given the estimated 900,000 nations on the books, and a UN membership of 36,000 you can see that about - what? 4-5% of Nation States nations are in the UN. The others seem to get along without it.

This website supports a lot of other forums - II, Gameplay and the other one (which I can't remember - sorry) and a lot of the nations who never come on to this thread post regularly in there.

To me (and I am just talking about me, not Tori or any other nation/national leader) the UN is a place to come and talk to people about things that affect TilEnca. Not the real world, but the fictional NS world. And a lot of the resolutions passed in the past have been pretty good for that. The UBR, the Rights of Labour Unions, The Good Samaritan Act - they all do good things. So do most of the others.

So this time we have a resolution that is badly written - that is not always the case. I am writing a convention on Genocide that is hopefully going to be well written and very good.

And the NS definition of resolution is not the same as the Websters Dictionary version, nor is it the same as the "real" UN's version. It is a law that, once passed, effects every member nation whether they agree with it it or not. Which is a powerful thing to enact (or try to enact). And again some of the ones written are fantastic, others not so much. But stick with it - even if this one passes - cause the next one might blow you away and make you wonder what you thought the problem with.

In conclusion - THE UN ROCKS!! (sorry)
