A Day in The Life of a UN Delegate

The Black New World
14-11-2004, 17:13
Introduction

The Gothic Glory of The Black New World was elected delegate of The Order of The Valiant States 32 days ago. They have acted as the delegate for that nation once before and also as the delegate for 'Underground Socialist Paradise' which is now dead.

Desdemona is the woman in charge of endorsements. She accepts them based on her countries view and/or the views of members of her region.

She is active in The UN on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays (GMT) but she will pop in on other days if she is free. Monday she faces the Grand Counsel and explains her decisions.

Unless she knows what she is looking for she only checks the proposal list on Sundays and Wednesdays. She sorts though each proposal and supports the ones she likes the look of.

This is an account of what she does when she makes these checks on Sunday 14th November. We hope this will serve as a guide to those seeking support and those writing a proposal.

The Telegrams

The first thing Desdemona has to face is the group of telegrams that she has received. Desdemona, unlike some delegates, enjoys getting telegrams for proposal writers and members of her nation asking for support providing they are well written, to the point, and polite. Today she has received two.

One of the telegrams is asking her to support a proposal she doesn’t agree with. Because they were polite about it, she sends them a note saying that she will not be supporting it but good luck anyway. The other telegram is from Vastiva asking her for support of 'Definition of Marriage'. Desdemona does a quick search and approves the proposal.

The Forum

After a quick breakfast she travels to The UN building. Upon arrival she jumps straight into the discussions. Here her job is to let people know what The Black New World will be supporting.

After looking over some proposals she decides she doesn’t like the sound of them and tells the author she will not support them with a basic explanation. She forwards her reasons to Giordano so he can answer any questions about why The Black New World disagrees with them.

If a member of her region telegrammed asking her to she would retract her previous judgement and support it.

She notes that 'Legalize Marijuana' has not reached quorum, despite her support, and asks Olde York to resubmit it.

The List

After discussion she retreats to her office in The UN building to check through the list. She starts at the back. Today it is 15 pages long.

The following proposals have her support today: Protect refugee camps, Definition of Marriage, and Promotion of Literature.

Some of the other proposals she supports the idea of but they are actually illegal. 'Adoption Rights for Gay Couple' is one of them, it reads
The controversal issue of whether gay marriages shall be legal will be decided by the regions and within the nations, not from the United Nations.
that has already been decided and hasn't been repealed. 'Legalise euthanasia' is another, euthanasia is already legal.

The rest, such as the many repeals she does not agree with.

That being over with she heads out to find some alcohol.

Aww, poor Hack is feeling unloved again. We all appreciate what you lot do, no matter how much we may yell at you at times.

I don't tend to get too many telegrams... though I am pretty active at scanning the proposals list every 2-4 days, looking for ones I may agree with.

I too have noticed "Legalize Marjiuana" hasn't reached quorum yet (I'd like it to, at least once) despite my support for it as well.

Back when I was a delegate I went through the proposal list daily, or at least the last few pages to see what new proposals had been submitted.

Unfortuneately, I haven't normally had that availability... given that in RL I am presently spending most of my weeks installing network drops in a hotel, and stuck on marginal dialup.

That's fine I'm just saying what I did when I was delegate. (And for the record I'm on dialup as well)
