Capital Punishment
A resolution to improve world security by boosting police and military budgets.

Category: International Security
Strength: Strong
Proposed by: Saint Les

Description: Many nations today suffer from terrible crime problems and despite them constantly passing their own laws, crime doesn't seem to drop. This is due to lack of money in the military/police and education sectors and of course, due to the absence of any type of punishement that works.
Therefore, through this bill, I propose these things:

1) Increased funding to the military/police and education sectors.

2)Introduction of compulsory death sentence, therefore meaning all criminals found guilty of serious crimes such as murder and treason, will be immediately put to death.

3)Harsher punishments for other crimes to act as a deterant for future criminals.

4)The right to send young offenders to institutes where they will be taught to act like mature and civilised members of society.

By passing this bill, you will not only be reducing crime in the world, you will also be increasing funding to sectors that need it and also working towards world peace.

Though I am not a Delegate yet, I hope to be in the future because unlike now I'd vote on more of these proposals instead of letting them fall through the cracks. Also I urge anyone to read this to vote against the Capital Punishment proposal. While I'm all for tough-on-crime attitude by the police and criminal justice system, the Capital Punishment system leaves no room for mistakes for the innocent.

There is little or no conclusive evidence that capital punishment reduces the crime rate. There is some evidence to show that can be responsible for more crimes being committed.

And given all the recent discussion in these forums about the phrase "national sovereignty" and when it should and should not be used to debate proposals, I am very loath to do it now.

But TilEnca has no death penatly, and will never introduce on. The act of killing someone in a premeditated fashion is appalling to us, and we will never support legislation that would force us to do such a thing.

I will actively campaign against this, and should it pass I will resign from the United Nations so that I can protect the lives of my people from this offensive and unjust course of action.

I will support the idea of the education sectors needing more money, but the other parts - needing more military and police spending - is not proven. My nation is crime free by spending money on the social side of things, rather than military or police. And the death penalty - which we do not have - clearly is not a factor.

1) Increased funding to the military/police and education sectors.

Why military? The military are not allowed to do law enforcement in my nation so spending more money on them will not prevent more crimes.

2)Introduction of compulsory death sentence, therefore meaning all criminals found guilty of serious crimes such as murder and treason, will be immediately put to death.

I have already made my views on this very clear. And I do not necessarily find treason to be a crime.

3)Harsher punishments for other crimes to act as a deterant for future criminals.

Again there is little or no evidence that making the punishment more severe does anything to act as a deterrent.

4)The right to send young offenders to institutes where they will be taught to act like mature and civilised members of society.

I really dislike the subjective terms "mature" and "civilized" appearing in any proposal.

I would like you to explain how this is the case, because I find there to be no basis for this assertion anywhere in your proposal.

Even as a proponent of fair and just use of Capital Punishment, I find this resolution as too vague, and arbitrary for my approval as a delegate.
