The Triumph of Verboisity Over Straightforwardness

As part of a draft resolution I have asked people on this forum to look at I felt the need to specify an amount of money to be spent i teh proposal. I used the real world currency of Euros. Several people objected to this as an unpermitted encroachment of the real world into our idylic simulation. The offendinding passage now uses a new currency I have defined as the UNit. To fully and clearly define the UNit I have added another article to my draft proposal. Could others look this over and give me comments ("Jeez that's a real mess" really isn't constructive and is patently obivious).

7. DEFINES a UN currency called the UNit, plural UNits; the value of the UNit, which is not a physical currency, is determined by a survey of the ten most populous UN members with a free market in whole wheat bread and whole milk, said nations henceforth referred to as free market nations; by “free market” for the purposes of this resolution it is meant that the government or corporate entity(or entities) does not provide price supports, that any taxes levied may be straightforwardly subtracted from the prices, sufficient competition exists that no single provider has over 20% of the market for either whole wheat bread or whole milk within said nation, in the opinion of a majority of the members of UNTFRL that no collusion or cartel is artificially influencing whole wheat bread or whole milk prices and finally that each nation allows the market driven interchange of its currency freely with those of the other nine nations; the value of the UNit is determined by the following method: the average pretax value of an approximately ½ kilo loaf of whole wheat bread and an approximately 2 liter container of whole milk – where these sizes are not available the closest size will be used and then the price corrected to be proportional to the specified size - each of these ten average values will be calculated in the currency of the most populous of these ten nations, for whole wheat bread or whole milk the largest and smallest average value will be ignored and the middle eight values averaged; the average for whole wheat bread and whole milk will then be averaged and this final average will be the value of the UNit; for the following two years the value of the UNit will be directly tied to the most populous nations currency at the value calculated here; in the event of a re-evaluation of the most populous nation’s currency, the exchange rate of the most populous free market nation and the second most populous free market nation will be used t calulate teh value of the unit in teh seond most populous free market nation's currency for the remainder of the two years with subsequent re-evaluations handled in a similar fashion as determined by UNTFRL; the UNit is only a currency in the sense of it standing in for other currencies; no physical currency will be issued; the UN and UN member nations are strongly encouraged to perform transaction using other nations currency rather than using the UNit; the UNit’s purpose is to give a stable international value that member nations can use to express values within the Nationstate simulation without resort to Euros or Dollars.

I for one am embarrassed about having to stoop to this, but isn't life grand?

Good thing we don't have to fret about this rigamarole.

We don't have milk or wheat.

We just have rum and pepperoni.

That is by far and away the best run-on sentence I have seen in recent history. You should be VERY proud of it :}

You do realize that a properly drafted resolution is ENTIRELY a run on sentence? Read the actual UN resolutions. One uses semi-colons rather than periods. I have placed a few stops in the document, just to save the readers breath, but stylistically it is incorrect.

The good thing is that in English you can do it if you know what you're doing. In German for instance, with a sentence that long you would only really know what it says once you reach the end. ;)

However necessary it is, it _does not_ belong in the literacy resolution. The need for the UNit and the need for the literacy resolution are quite independent. Those who don't like dollars and euros in Nation States should be voting for the UNit irrespective of whether they support literacy, and vice versa.

(I've not been here for long, but it's a sign of "All the world's the USA" that it's euros, rather than dollars, that have sparked this debate, isn't it)

It's probably not a good idea to let a resolution like that on literacy (which Bujoldyar fully supports, BTW) get weakened by accreting lots of supporting clauses like this one. The anti-bookburning clause appears from the discussion on that thread to have weakened it considerably already.

I agree that the UNit should be defined elsewhere. The problem is that I need the UNit for this proposal. However, the cranky software took care of this issue for me. The proposal was too long for the editor so I had to make defining the UNit a second proposal. I do hope that those that vote for "The Gobal Literacy Act" realize "Defining the UNit" needs to be also included.
