Description: UN Resolution #5: DVD region removal (Category: Free Trade; Strength: Mild) shall be struck out and rendered null and void.

Argument: What does this resolution mean anyway? It is dumb, stupid, and makes no sense. The spelling is awful. Let us strike this awful resolution from the records.

Approvals: 1 (_Susa_)
Let's just get rid of this awful and pointless amendment. Anything you could do to help would be appreciated.

EDIT: My 1984 post.

Attacking a poorly written proposal with arguments like "It is dumb, stupid, and makes no sense," probably isn't going to garner too much support. While I agree that the resolution is a poorly-framed attempt to broaden the ability of pirates to spread their product across the globe, your reason for repealing the item doesn't really say that. Perhaps if you justify the act of nullifying legislation with a bit more than name calling, people will be more receptive.

Even though this resolution was passed long before TilEcna joined the UN, I would oppose any moves to remove it from the books. We consider it a matter of freedom of expression and free speech.

And with the amount of region free dvd players in the world, it hardly seems worthwhile repealing it anyway - it will have little or no effect on the piracy of movies and other such things.

Removing DVDs is pointless. It's like if we were to take buses away, we could make do. No one is going to vote (no one who is a SMART un-member) on removing dvds so why make a proposal against it? :D

It's removing DVD regions not DVDs themselves. You know, those things that don't let you play DVDs from America on European DVD players?

DVD's Dirty Little Secret - Region Codes (http://hometheater.about.com/cs/dvdlaserdisc/a/aaregioncodesa.htm)

Essentially, it's to prevent cheap Asian copies from being playable on European and American DVD players.

(OOC)
Really? Cause I thought it was so the UK manufactures of DVDs could screw the British public over by giving them DVDs with almost no special features on for an inflated cost, then release a "special edition" a year later that is exactly the same as the one that has been on sale in the US for three years.

(Back in character)
I still believe that people should be allowed to see which ever version of a film (etc) they want, rather than the one their government wants them to see.
