New proposal idea

There was a proposal coming up in the UN that would require all member nations to have at least one public (run by the government) news station. That got me thinking about another proposal idea, and I wanted to try and get everyones (mainly UN deligates for now) opions about it before I submitted it. This proposal would basically require that all member nations allow for at least 50% of their total news stations to be privately run. This would prohibit UN member nations from monopolising the flow information in their countries, which ultimately leads to corruption. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Bah. The state-run "Ofishal Supa Dupa Orky Newz Plaze" provides all the news the Greenskinz need, and its hosted by a war hero to boot. OSDONP delivers all the news we need to know to stay happy. Privatized networks would simply flood the airways with distressing news in cheap attempts to raise ratings. Down with private networks!

There can be just as much, if not more corruption, and motive driven news in government run news media outlets as there can be in private ones. That's why I think there should be both. That way, there are more view points represented, and at least on that is SUPPOSED to represent the general population's interests. Does anyone else have any other ideas?

I proposed, at least in draft form, a Freedom of the Press proposal, and it was shot down by the members on the forums.

Thanks for your advice. I wish more nations were interested in this important topic.

While the Republic of Tekania is a firm believer the free-market system of capitalism, the Republic would not support this resolution (nor the former one) as we are firm in our convictions of the economic freedom of each nation to choose their system. One takes on to force socialism (state run/funded news station) the other seeks to force capitalism (private run news station).

This is interesting. I would agree to this, only if they would have to face a censor board run by the government itself. That way, we could ensure that the people did not hear anything indecent.

That's not quit what my proposal would do. I couldn't force a private news station to open shop. That has to happen because a business man has the desire to do so. I just want to prevent any nation from preventing privately run news stations.

I'm not quit sure about a censor board. That power is getting abused in America as we speak. It could be taken even further if the government wished, and could take control of the privately run news stations through the censorship board. If the board censors everything that they don't want the public to see, then the station can only show the people what the government wants them to see.
