Grassroots Democracy

Our Own Laziness
29-05-2004, 14:48
Grassroots democracy is the political processes which are driven by groups of ordinary citizens, as opposed to larger organizations or wealthy individuals with concentrated vested interests in particular policies. Grassroots movements and communities around the world are increasingly working together to stem the tide of corporate-led globalization. Big Business shouldn't be allowed to determine who leads and who doesn't.

This proposal will:
1) INCREASE public participation at every level of government and to ensure that our public representatives are fully accountable to the people who elect them

2) CREATE new types of political organizations which expand the process of participatory democracy by directly including citizens in the decision-making process

3) ENSURE that no political candidate is corporately funded or sponsored

Ok, you've stated what the proposal is supposed to do. Care to explain HOW it's going to do it?

This seems to be a big step into national jurisdiction, in my opinion.
There is an issue that comesup about political parties being funded by businesses, and you can choose whether or not to let them do it.
While I agree that the grassroots are the core of the poltical process, I don't think it should be up to the UN to ensure it.

Additionally, this proposal's stated effects would trample right over a majority of the government types/classifications with the NS world. The Political Process within a given nation is that nation's sole perogative. When other nations begin interfering with that process, well most nations deem any such interference an act of war.

The internal political structure of a nation is not an area the UN should be addressing.
