We have submitted a proposal for a Fair Trade Agreement that reads as follows:
The General Assembly of the United Nations,
Recognizing that “free trade” often has costs rooted in the inequities of the countries involved,
1. Proposes that the United Nations encourage nations to use a floating-rate mechanism (hereafter “fair trade mechanism”) to determine tariffs on goods from any country,
2. Accepts that the fair trade mechanism should measure and compensate for differences in environmental standards, human rights levels, and quality-of-life indicators,
3. Affirms that application of the fair trade mechanism between nations which are comparable in the above areas should result in free trade between those nations,
4. Accepts that the fair trade mechanism rely on accurate statistics maintained by the United Nations about each nation,
5. Recommends that principles of the fair trade agreement be applied in the resolution of trade disputes between member nations.
This proposal should be seen in no way as hampering countries’ individual abilities to form their own trade pacts.
Environmental standards will be measured using the indicators: air quality, water quality, waste production and management.
Human rights standards will be measured using the indicators: the ability to directly participate in government, employment standards, protections against discrimination, freedom of speech, and freedom of association.
Quality-of-life indicators will include: infant mortality rate, life expectancy for men, life expectancy for women, and average earnings. Negative points will be allowed within calculation of these indicators to offer compensation for poorer nations.
We ask for your endorsements of this proposal, in our bid to make a more equitable world that still allows individual countries control of their own affairs.
Your comments are also appreciated.
