Equality in Currency

Category: Free Trade; A resolution to reduce barriers to free trade and commerce.
Strength: Significant

Proposed by: The God Falltothzu

Description: I propose that a standard exchange rate of currency is created and adapted by all of the countries within the United Nations. Three basic reasons to endorse and vote for this proposal are:
1) Now one unit of a currency will always equal one unit of another currency. This will encourage trade all over the world.
2) Science all over the world has conformed to the metric system. Currency should conform, as well, to a standardized rate of exchange. The metric system has revolutionized science, and has unquestionably made it better. We now must try to do the same with a rate of exchange for all currency systems, so that many nations' economies will grow and flourish off of a new, more efficient foreign trade.
3) Now the world will be more unified, and have another common ground to stand on when it comes to trade.

Voting Ends: Fri May 7 2004

Uhh... I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you haven't had any serious economics classes in whatever school just yet. Turning massive inflation into the end goal of every UN economy isn't a good idea -- in more layman's terms, the yen is presently valued at something between 0.01 and 0.02 USD, I believe; can you imagine the effects on the international economy if Japan's net worth were suddenly multiplied by nearly 100 times? And suppose the Japanese mint then decided to put out hundreds of thousands, even millions of new yen every day? I'd strongly advise against purposely throwing the world into a catastrophic interest cycle.

You'd probably be better off suggesting a unified UN currency, much like the Euro. There are, of course, other implications to that, and you'll probably be debated there as well, but it's a more reasonable stance. I think it's only fair to tell you, though, that proposals for unified currency fail to reach quota on a moderately regular basis.

The benchmark currency wasn't specified (a rather glaring omission...), so alternately, the US dollar could end up devalued by a factor of 100.

The kzag, Kzagblech's currency, is valued at Kz1 == US$15.00. We'd be screwed no matter what unit you pick. I'm sure NS has its share of lira-like microcurrencies, too.

His Holiness the Governor-General must object for reasons which should be self-evident to any who have attended even the most rudimentary of economic educations available even in the most educationally deprived of nations.

In addition to the inflation problem, it removes individual nations' power over their own monetary policy, and can cause prolonged recessions and depressions as governments can't respond to their populations' economic needs. Also, floating exchange rates naturally arrive at a price which capitalizes on comparative advantages in production, which leads to mutually beneficial international trade.

Also, some economic systems don't use money. You can't force money on a country that uses genuine communism.
