I think you should be able to - within reason - . I think alot of people forget that the swastika was adopted by the Nazi's, and thus has gained the image of being a symbol of hate and oppression. In china, or Japan, i forget, it was a symbol of good luck, but was turned on its side by the Nazi party.

Edit: ignore me
I wish that Max would change his mind on the issue but its unlikely. It is also well outside of the jurisdiction of the United Nations.

The swastika is a sacred symbol in Hinduism- you'll find them all over Hindu temples, and the word "swastika" is from Sanskrit. However, the Nazis's swastika is rotated 45 degrees relative to the Hindu swastika. I don't know why exactly the Nazis adopted the swastika, but there might be some link between it and the ancient Aryan people (I might be wrong...). The Aryans were a group from Central Asia that invaded India and Europe and contributed greatly to Indian culture and religion.
Anywho, as the representative from Albion Soviets stated, it's Max Berry's decision that the swastika is not allowed, and he pays for and runs NationStates, so his is the last word on gaming issues.

For somebody who *seems* to be arguing that he / she should be able to do this on the basis of free speech, your poll is LEADING. You set it up so people can either reply "yes" or "no, because I suck ...".
You aren't practicing freedom either!
If you really feel strongly about freedom / civil liberties, maybe you could: (1) practice a bit of what you are advocating for, and (2) work your own flag where you untwist the cross and have a red flag, with a white circle and a black cross. An example of a Politically Correct Nazi flag can be found on many WWII toys.
It is a middle ground, and you'll find that it may give you a leg to stand on. But right now, based on the way you set up your poll, your argument comes across as hypocritical.

No, and I dont "suck ass" as you so eloquently put it; I just don't like symbols of damnable evil. Besides who would want to share the symbol of such a failed empire that barely lasted a decade and a half?

Max Barry....'Berry?'...No, Barry. 'Berry?' ... No, Barry, with an 'A.' 'Berry, with an 'e'?'....
My opinion is against the use of the Nazi flag as your nation's flag...while the Hindu swastika may be okay, the Nazi flag symbolizes superior culture, racism, blah, blah...fine in the RP world, but not really a good idea anyways :P I can see why Max wouldn't like such symbols.

In Japan the swastika is used on maps to designate temples. It is an ancient symbol of hinduhism denoting the 4 stages of life. Obviously, it was adopted by the Buddhists as well. Why the Nazi's decided to use it is anyones guess....... but the swastika was an aryan symbol. The aryans being the culture that settled India thousands of years ago ... not the blonde haired, blue eyed Nordics which the Nazi's called aryans.
As to the question posed... I don't see why 3 colours in a specific pattern should be banned.
I'm all for free speech, but I'm also for stating it eloquently.
Instead of:
1 pwn5 g1v3 n4z1 fl4g 1m 1337!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1111111111 (yes, yes, I know, horribly exagerrated
You might want to try:
I wish to use a certain unfairly banned symbol in my flag. The swastika, need I remind you, if tilted at an angle different from the way Hitler used it, is a symbol of good luck. Barring the similarities to the 1940s German flag, I mean no real connection to the failed racist empire and apologize in advance to anyone who may misunderstand and take offense.
And if a nazi flag is banned, would it also be illegal to use a soviet or confederate flag? Both of those are kind of hateful failed empires. So would they?

The shape of the swastika is also strikingly similar to the Manji I think its called, which is a Japanese symbol for good fortune I belive. If you remember in the first Legend of Zelda, one of the level's was shaped like one. I the third one. I also remember seeing on the news that they had put a manji in the background of I think a pokemon card, and people flipped out because they think is offensive, but its really not.
HOWEVER, I belive that the Nazi flag is very offensive, because the basis of the Nazi's was to elimanate all non-arian people, and they belived they were superior and wanted to elimanate the lesser people. I belive representing that symbol, demonstrates a serious lack of regard for human life.

It's against the rules of the site. It won't be changed. Move on, it's not worth the time to debate it anymore.

I believe that the Nazi swastika is the indian version reflected horizontaly.
In a TV program i saw, Hitler came up with the flag because it meant "the unconquerable", although this probably isn't true.

The Swastika as it is known in the west appears in eastern litterature, Early chinese versions of the Heart Sutra, show buddha with a swastika on his forehead. The Symbol is pre-runic in origin. It's germanic root links it to the sun, the light of creation. The Runic equivalent is the Rune Seig or Sigil. The pre runic symbol most likely migrated with the aryan settlers who either conquered or simply migrated into ancient india, ultimately merging with the local population. (How's that for white power? ) The symbol retained it's sun-like meaning eventually coming to signify similar things in buddhist litterature...
The Nazi version is reversed on the original and the exact occult meaning escapes me at present.
So umm... why is this in the UN forum?

Yes, you should be able to use it. The Hazanian Communist Party wholeheartedly believes in free speech and free expression. However, like all liberals, we disagree wtih the extreme right-wing Nazis and would have to destroy any countries with Nazi flags.

Also many people identify with the military aspect of the Nazi regime and could care less for their unusual doctrine.
so, no one ever answered my question. What about USSR or CSA (confederate states of america)? Are their flags and/or symbols allowed on flags? Not that I would use them, just curious.

Their flags are allowed just the same as the American flag is ... though I *rarely* if ever see the US flag being used in the game.
The issue at hand is less of the question of the right to use the Nazi flag verses the question of freedom of expression.
The original author created a LEADING / biased poll, that is designed to limit the freedom of our expression and is asking us to allow him the right to express himself.
Under normal circumstances, I'd be inclined to allow the use of the flag. But when the person wants it ALREADY has shown that he himself approves of the limitation of freedom of expression, I say give him a taste of his own medicine.
Bottom line: he threw away his right to use the flag the minute he made the poll for this thread.

2. Swastika flags are going to remain illegal.
