In responce to the education resolution

07-04-2004, 00:24
Scarbrough has voted against this resolution and I encourage you all to do the same. Where is this money going to come from? The UN is not a bank or a treasury for the world body. If the funding for these huge goals for education were there and could just be magicly pulled out of the air, many countries would have done so long ago.

The UN is not at a stage where it can be used to fund mage projects for countries. The fact is the UN still has many problems to work out within its own walls before it can truly start to make a diffrence. How can we allow dictators to have a say in education funding for the world when the deny it to their own citizens to maintain their stangle hold on the people. The UN needs to purge its ranks of all the tyrants before it can truly be called legitimate.

 But you'll be damning all of the world's children to bad school lunches! How can you be so uncivilized!

OK, all joking aside, you are completely right. This resolution justifies action based on an incorrect assumption:

that by throwing money into socities that some committee decides are broken, that we can fix things like bad tasting school lunches

It is as if instead of looking to the real problem and investing in things like student exchanges, teacher training, and most importantly basic declarations such as those that children are entitled to free educations we just throw money around.

This resolution is so sorry that it has inspired me to create a UN Mad-Lib. Basically you enter in your cool neato name for a new committee. You enter in the name of some local / national level issue you want to regulate: be it prostitution, third graders, or dwarf tossing. Then you pick an arbitrary amount of money to come from the UN: 0 to 50%. And just repeat using the name of your new committee and how you plan to fight the injustice of dwarf tossing or whatever your particular fetish is, and then PRESTO a new UN resolution.
