One of the most pressing issues in the world is the exploitation of cheap labor in the forms of young children. Many industries that mass-produce products for the global market use children in factories. Every government has an obligation to protect our most vulnerable citizens and preserve a high quality of life as a whole.
NOTING that children are working long hours, sometimes up to 15 hours a day. This prevents them from receiving enough sleep and stunts their growth. Breaks and reasonable shifts are nonexistent. REALIZING children are paid less than the minimum wage and even less than adults performing the same tasks. Many child laborers are paid less than half of what a man’s wage. OBSERVING the dangerous conditions in which many work. There is a lack of any safety guidelines in most sweatshops. Factories are filthy, unsanitary facilities, often without toilets, safety equipment, or building codes. Frequent accidents maim or even kill young children. AWARE that children are often beaten or abused on the job. Most sweatshops hire overseers who force children to continuously work. CONCERNED that many of these children will work in low-end jobs for the rest of their lives, no hope of improving their lives and those of their children.
RECOMMEND that all countries ban sweatshops and implement mandatory safety guidelines to protect workers. FURTHER RECOMMEND children under the age of 15 are not allowed to work in factories. Instead children must attend school up to junior high. CALLS UPON nations to set a minimum wage for all workers. SUGGESTS a routine surprise inspections be made on all licensed workplaces to insure the enforcement of guidelines. REQUESTS all governments vigorously enforce these provisions to the best of their ability.
