For those that oppose everything about proposals

01-03-2004, 04:28
Realize that when you join the UN, it specifically states that you will have to obey rules. Even if you don't believe in them. If you don't like a proposal, vote against it. However, if it is passed, accept it or leave the UN. That's just how it works. The fact is, the reason you pass resolutions and decide to make laws is to change things. If you just take a completely unbiased standpoint, nothing gets done. The fact is, any resolution will have to propose something that will force a few member nations to change. However, the majority votes for it.

As said before, you have a choice. If you don't like it, leave the UN.

That's not always true. In NS, yes, it is true, however in the real world, the UN may pass resolutions but not all nations are required to follow them. The most recent example is the US disregarding a non-resolution passed in favor of an invasion of Iraq to eliminate Saddam Hussein.

The fact is, the reason you pass resolutions and decide to make laws is to change things.

Sometimes. Other times, it's simply to benefit the majority, which isn't always in good taste.

If you just take a completely unbiased standpoint, nothing gets done.

This is not true, taking an unbiased standpoint allows for nations to appease its citizens, especially if they are against a resolution or particualr legislative proposal. Going against the the people's wishes can lead to civil unrest and uprising in extreme cases and a change of political government status in others.

As said before, you have a choice. If you don't like it, leave the UN.

Agreed.

Heh, I realize where you're coming from, sorry in being vague. My first post was referring exclusively to NationStates UN. I definately agree with the stuff you posted about as it applies to the real world, because to put it simply, it's all about keeping the power.

But here...heh, to put it blatently, you really have no population to appease or to displease :)

Yes, but in the role-playing world, you do, and you must abide by the rules in order to play properly.

Well, that's what I mean. If you don't like the UN regulations on game, then you don't stay in the UN. And a majority of the players don't Roleplay at all. Some mean to (Alrindor).

The delegate from Alrindor is correct in stating that nations are obligated to comply with all proposals passed by the UN. However, as many of the proposals placed before the UN are poorly written, contain numerous loopholes, and pay little or no attention to critical minutaie, nations may in many cases, as the Emperor has in the past done, apply a liberal interpretation of the approved proposal in order to follow the letter of the law, if not the spirit in which it was written.

Loopholes are the crux of maintaining dignity under the heavy hand of UN authority.

For example, Prostitution is legal in the Confederacy of the Eternal Cross, but contraceptives are ridiculously expensive, making it extremely risky.

Likewise, the UN resolution on Gay Rights indicates that the segment of the population that is opposed to the gay agenda is "an outspoken minority." However, according to recent demographics in our nation, we have found that it is actually the majority, by approximately 86.3% (+/- 2% MOE). As such, we have passed national legislation where gay marriages will indeed be recognized by law, but only if the most stringent conditions are met.

In addition, our lobbyists are drafting a proposal for bringing past UN proposals up for review & possible repeal.

If you do so, you will be ejected from this body.

Addendum: New Schedule of Proposal Offences
There are now two types of Proposal Offences, Minor Offences and Flagrant Offences. 3 Minor Offences will get you removed from the UN, while 1 Flagrant Offence is enough.

Flagrant Offences
1. Radical changes to Game Mechanics - including but not limited to the following: setting up parallel UNs, Security Councils etc; allowing individual nations to decide whether or not to abide by resolutions; repeal proposals or proposals supporting the repeal of past resolutions.

If you don't like it, leave the UN.

So typical of One-Worlders... our way or the highway. Those that falsely claim to stand for freedom or its worst oppressors. Do not listen to these minions of the UN Beast... join the UN. It is only by voting against the resolutions that would enslave us all, that the One-Worlders can be defeated.

I call upon all non-aligned nations to join the UN and be the Loyal Opposition. When it is the turn of the One-Worlders to sit in opposition, let history judge their actions... then.
