Vote AGAINST the UN Space Consortium

Etanistan
26-02-2004, 18:21
The Muppet Show of Etanistan has voted against this proposal for two reasons:

1. The corporation system of purchasing shares seems ill-defined in terms of the goals of the proposal. In a corporation, share holders buy their shares and expect that these shares will increase in value and perhaps offer dividends. What benefit is there to buying shares in this new UN organization? Will the shareholders with the most shares simply get to colonize larger parts of the moon or reap more of the resources from the moon? Or do they simply obtain a more powerful vote on international lunar projects? This resolution is unclear on exactly what the new organization would do or why it is necessary to sell shares in the new organization.

2. While it is unclear exactly WHAT powers are granted to nations who purchase shares, it is clear to us that the corporate shareholder model is ill-fitted to the goals of the resolution. Equating power with economic power is not a move FORWARD in international relations. If the goal of this resolution is to move away from a solar system in which wealthy nations control the fates of less wealthy nations, than the shareholder model is extremely counterproductive. It will merely create a new form of imperialism in which wealthy countries continue to be more powerful.

We urge other UN members to vote against this resolution. While the idea of cooperative space exploration is a favorable one, we would propose a rotating board of member nations so that all nations have a term in power regardless of the wealth of their nations.

I agree, please VOTE AGAINST the proposal not only for the reasons stated above, but because space is a new world that scientists know hardly anything about.
We have already wrecked the earth, the ocean, and the air, we must not wreck space, we must preserve it and study it from earth.
For all we know, we could be disturbing as yet undiscovered forms of life, it is not our right to disturb them.
I believe we do not have the right to study animals, or to eat them, because they have as much right to life on this planet as we do. Until we know more about what lies in space, we should not explore it

Brilliant! Speaking as one who is not ashamed of having evolved to the top of the food chain may I ask;
Exactly how are we supposed to know more about space if we DON'T explore it?
" We have already wrecked the earth , ocean and the air," time to replace the tin foil in your hat and get a grip on reality. You are disturbing THIS life form.
By the way, Space is not a world and it is rather too large for humans to wreck ( what ever that means). It already seems to be full of radiation and rocks and black holes. So just what would we have to do to make it worse? Litter?

What ARE you talking about? Wrecked the Earth, water and air? Thats just not true. he skys are still blue, the ocean is still clear, and the earth isn't paved over. Simply because you have been seduced by hippie propaganda does not mean you should be aainst space exploration. Also, the shares are there to simply provide income for the space project. These people will have more power over it, of course, and they should, they would be paying for it, if you want to own it it have power, then buy it, if not then don't. There is nothing inherently wrong with this proposal, unless you are against free trade...

How about strip mine, destroy untouched planets, and create massive debris fields around our own planet?

So far only one of these, but I am sure that the rest will come soon.

And yes, we have made a mess out of our planet.

And what the heck do you mean tin foil in his hat???

Besides, you are one of the narsty life forms causing all this; you probably deserve to be disturbed.

we must go to space... just NOT as a world power... having the world come together like this has been tried in other areas and HAS NOT WORKED!! universal languages and such have been tried and nothing has worked... the un is as far as a world power will go... go to space, just not all together!!

I posted in the other topic that no discussion on space would be complete without a bunch of extraneous Wernher von Braun quotes. Here they are:

"Man is the best computer we have, and the only one that can be mass-produced by unskilled labor."

"There is just one thing I can promise you about the space program—your tax-dollar will go further."

"I have learned to use the word ‘impossible’ with only the greatest caution."

"I aimed for the stars, but I hit London."

"The space program will free man from his remaining chains, the chains of gravity which still tie him to this planet. It will open to him the gates of heaven."

"Crash programs fail because they are based on theory that, with nine women pregnant, you can get a baby a month."

"Don’t tell me that man doesn’t belong out there. Man belongs wherever he wants to go—and he’ll do plenty well when he gets there."

"Research is what I call it when I don’t know what I’m doing."

"We can lick gravity, but sometimes the paperwork is overwhelming."

"For my confirmation, I didn’t get a watch and my first pair of long pants, like most Lutheran boys. I got a telescope. My mother thought it would make the best gift."

I too voted against this resolution. But the thing that is troubling to me is that in the history of this NationStates UN Council, not one resolution has EVER been defeated. Why debate this issue? It will just pass anyways.

Incorrect. Several resolutions have been defeated, most recently Internet Advertising Pop-ups.
