Many nations, if an effort to boost their government revenues raise ruinous tariffs on imported goods. It is also seen as a way to keep local industry competitive within the particular nation. However, the detriment wrought by these tariffs, not only to the exporting nation, but also to the importing nation are severe and often unforseen by those who enact such tariffs. Not only must the citizens of the importing nation pay substantialy more for the same product, but government revenues suffer with the economy. Futhermore, while it may appear beneficia to local industy in the short run, it is dire in the long run. Corporations grow complacent and inefficient when the need for efficieny is taken away.

However, it is not the intention of this resolution to abolish import tariffs completely, but only to curb some of the abuses of them, for the good of the whole world economy.

It is RESOLVED that no UN member nation shall enact import tariffs exceeding 20% of the retail value of the import product, and that those nations which persist in these tariffs face UN economic sanctions to be determined by the General Assembly as the need arises and in proportion to the offense.
