From a long time i'm thinking a hymn to the UN... I propose to vote, and in a second time we can find the right song to be the hymn of the of the UN.... :D

I'm having trouble with the verses, but the refrain keeps running through my head. Something to do with "crack-smoking monkeys keep pounding on my brain" ...

1) I really hope you mean an anthem, not a hymn.

2) Why in God's name would we need either an anthem or a hymn???

If there is an anthem or a hymn then it should be in Latin that way it doesn't "favor" any particular modern nation.

We should then vote for what language it should be in.

Clearly, if you study the world as extensively as I do, you learn that only one thing connects every single culture, regardless of their level of development:

SESAME STREET

From China to India, from Israel to Palestine, the US, UK, South Africa, France, Spain, Mexico, Russia, Australia... every nation that matters in the least bit has access to the world's ambassadors of peace, the Sesame Street Muppets. I daresay that the greatest thing this body can do for the NationStates world is to grant Sesame Street the honor it deserves: make the Sesame Street Theme Song the World's Anthem. And since there is a plurality of users who speak English, English would be the most logical choice. However, as there are very vocal minorities perhaps the best choice would be a language that none are fluent in. I submit to you, Klingon.

Hey, N.S. exists on the net right? Why not just pirate an MP3 that suits the ideals? I suggest Don McLeans American Pie.

Some national anthems are referred to as "hymns". I think it's more common in Eastern Europe than anywhere else, but any examples escape me right at the present.

Well, we use the 'internationale' in Albion but we'd understand if it wasn't to veryone's taste. Therefore, I've been mandated to inform you that our choice would be 'Everybody was Kung Fu Fighting', which we sing, while holding each other's hands, at the start of each meeting.

You've been great, I've been John Marat, thanks for listening. ^_^

I believe Frisbeeteria came up with a particularly fine little song while a small group of us were discussing the implications of a uniform 35% tax rate over a snifter of single malt.

At least, I think we were discussing the tax rate issue, it's all very hazy...

Here's one we enjoy. It is theistic of course; most hymns are. It is nevertheless as inclusive as any you are likely to find.

This is my Song
This is my song, O God of all the nations,
a song of peace for lands afar and mine.
This is my home, the country where my heart is;
here are my hopes, my dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts in other lands are beating
with hopes and dreams as true and high as mine.

My country's skies are bluer than the ocean,
and sunlight beams on cloverleaf and pine;
But other lands have sunlight, too, and clover,
and skies are everywhere as blue as mine.
O hear my song, O God of all the nations,
a song of peace for their land and for mine.

--Hymn sung to the tune "Finlandia"

So that the UN isn't seen to favour athiests or any denominational religion, can the UN invent its own deity for the hymm?
14-02-2004, 08:35
Mistwalkers is correct, rather than looking for a song, the UN should be looking into creating it's own diety.

It'sa not so bad - HEY
It'sa nice-a place
AH SHADDAP YOU FACE

Maybe that's just the song we should sing at the next silly proposal.

Here's a nice piece, no theism required, courtesy of Satchmo.
It would set a good tone for our wrangling, too:

Some of you young folks been saying to me
"Hey Pops, what you mean "What a wonderful world"
How about all them wars all over the place
You call them wonderful
And how about hunger and pollution
That aint so wonderful either"
Well how about listening to old Pops for a minute
Seems to me, it aint the world that's so bad
but what we're doin' to it
And all I'm saying is
See what a wonderful world
It would be if only we'd give it a chance
Love baby, love
That's the secret, Yeah
If lots more of us loved each other
We solve lots more problems
And then this world would be better
That's wha' ol' Pops keeps saying
I see trees of green, red roses too
I see them bloom, for me and you
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

I see skies of blue, and clouds of white
The bright blessed day, dark sacred night
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky
Are also on the faces, of people going by
I see friends shaking hands, sayin' "how do you do?"
They're really sayin' "I love you"

I hear babies cryin', I watch them grow
They'll learn much more, than I'll never know
And I think to myself, what a wonderful world

Yes I think to myself, what a wonderful world
Oh yeah
