Universal Ecological Standards

My proposal, also known as the UNCLES resolution, is designed to promote the environment while not imposing oppressive or unworkable standards or controls on industry.

All nations need economic activity and an industrial base if they are to thrive. However, that does not mean that the enviornment can be ignored.

It is impossible to tell what species may lend itself to the possible cure for cancer, AIDS, or a variety of other scourges of human existence. Hence, minimal standards to prevent species from going extinct are needed.

We also want nations to keep an eye on how much pollution they are allowing to seep into the environment. We are not trying to outlaw pollution altogether -- that would be unrealistic and impose a huge burden on both developing nations and established industries providing jobs and wealth around the world. Instead, we only want to create minimal standards. Don't dump raw radioactive waste into your rivers. Don't let your smokestacks belch flesh-melting levels of sulfuric acid.

Help us find the balanced path between economic devastation and ecological disaster. We can prosper and leave a healthier, cleaner world for our children. Endorse and support the Universal Ecological Standards resolution!

Moderate, sensible, controlled, and specific regulations on environmental pollution are extremely reasonable. Long term benefits to the world outweigh individual nations's industrial suffering.

It's a start. You have our support on the basis that it at least hauls everyone up to a reasonable level. We only hope that everyone does not then settle at that level should more action be required.

Although, given postings we have read on these issues in the past, this proposal probably doesn't have a hope in hell.

As the sole purpose of government is to protect individual rights, the Republic of Ithuania cannot support this proposal.
