Support for outlawing 2-stroke outboard engines?

30-01-2004, 01:50
Would anyone be willing to support a proposal to ban 2-stroke outboard engines?

I think that it's pointless to release oil into our lakes, rivers, and oceans, killing off or seriously harming populations of various species.

4-stroke outboard engine technology has been around for a fair amount of time and I think it's time that we outlaw an ancient technology that does nothing but harm the world.

*Note: 2-cycle engines use an oil/gas mixture for fuel whereas a 4-stroke engine uses solely fuel, so it burns cleaner.

Thoughts?

This seems a waste of resources to enforce, if you ask me.

i agree there are other things which would be better off being banned. Secondly the cost of 4 stroke engines is huge compared to 2 stroke

Such a proposal would discriminate against the developing world, which often do not have the resources to invest in the so-called "cleaner" burning 4-stroke engines.

2-stroke engines have many advantages over 4-stroke engines that benefit the developing world. The pollution caused by 2 stroke engines in the developing world pales in comparison to that caused by 4-stroke engines in industrial countries. Perhaps resources would be better spent popularizing alternative fuel vehicles, mass transit, and other such measures that encourage the industrial world to move beyond the burning of compressed fossils to power their vehicles.

The glorious nation of Bahgum, thinks that any attempt, no matter how small, to help the environment is worthy of support. It is increasingly obvious that most nations are too short termist in their view on the worlds health and will happily ignore the warning signs until catastrophe hits them.
This proposal also pushes technology forward, which is also good. By the way, 'Frumpy Mullet' is a great name!

First, even four-stroke engines burn oil. Why not just ban outbord motors all together? Second, even inbord engines leak some oil into the lake, river, ocean, whatever. So maybe you need to ban them too. Third, two-stroke technology has greatly improved, making them cleaner, quieter, and more efficient. Banning a form of engine, to me, just doesn't make sense. I know of one small two-stroke, three-cylinder diesel that meets clean air standards for gas engines for the year 2008, and the car it gets put in, while not big or fast, gets about 100 mpg. Not bad, if you ask me. Two-stroke technology, without this ban, will improve even further. It may become the engine of choice, and cleaner than four strokes with enough development.
