Drinking age proposal

29-01-2004, 11:01
[IC]

In my nation the legal age for consumption of wine and beer is 16 and spirits 18.

This resolution actually INCREASES the minimum drinking age in my nation.

[OOC]

In RL many european nations have similar laws, can we please not have such Americo-centric resolutions that do not take into account other cultures.

Actually, no higher than 18 doesn't mean you can't set it lower - like 16 or 18 (or 7, if you wish)

However, the proposal is very culturally biased. For instance, in some countries consuming alcohol isn't legal at all, regardless of age.

Wayward Penguins would like to encourage all teenagers from countries with harsh drinking laws to spend their vacations on the pristine beaches and in the lush forests of Pinthazar. For a small fee, of course

Proposal:
Description: WHEREAS it is legal for teenagers to be drafted into the military at age 18

AND WHEREAS more than 50% of all people age 18-21 have tried alcohol

AND WHEREAS more than 25% of people ages 18-21 drink regularly as it is

AND WHEREAS many countries have lowered the drinking age already and no severe incidence has occured

LET IT BE RESOLVED THAT all member nations lower the minimum drinking age of its citizens to no higher than 18

Approvals: 3 (Octaneo, Roycelandia, Zachnia)

Status: Lacking Support (requires 141 more approvals)

Stupid proposal.

Gigglealia refuses to obey the majority of content of UN proposals. We're of a size and economic power that there are very few countries in the world that can oppose us. With compulsory military training, although we have a minimal standing army, we do have an entire population trained.

As a result of of our world benchmark educational standards and fine social structure, we're happy to stand apart from the stupid ideas the lesser nations of the UN tend to generate. This particular one is no exception.

Our academic bodies, vastly better funded than all but a handful of nations. are of the belief that rather than age restrictions, it is simpler to educate children in the correct consumption of alcohol. Our social structure is such that children hold respect for their elders and teachers and act accordingly.

In short, stfu newbies.

Catholic Europe does not support this proposal. People are allowed to drink any alcohol from the age of 16. This proposal would raise the age of consumption for some drinks, which we think should not happen.

This is an issue best left to the individual nations. Alcohol consumption has long been a cultural issue in many nations and this is not something the U.N. should be trying to abolish or regulate.
