UN delegates, I am currently trying to get approval for the below proposal. Although similar to the Sustainable Development proposal currently on page 5 (and could support that proposal were it to pass), this proposal does not target energy concerns. If you agree with this proposal, please endorse it.

DMAP - Deforestation Monitoring and Prevention

A resolution to increase the quality of the world's environment, at the expense of industry.

Category: Environmental
Industries Affected: All
Proposed by: Seranine

With the current advanced agricultural and industrial methods used, production of food and other products derived from finite natural resources have increased dramatically. However, as we extract greater production from each acre of land, more land that was formerly capable of yielding crops becomes exhausted and infertile and thus incabable of further production.

The dangers of desertification are clear. Without careful monitoring and research into this problem, the world's total arable lands will continue to decline, resulting in increased climate changes and droughts, as well as loss of animal and plant diversity. Even further losses would likely affect economic and political interests within nations and regions.

We propose that a UN agency be formed to oversee and organize world-wide research and tracking of this growing problem, as well as support other groups seeking to promote sustainable development. Through sustainable development, we can reliably count upon continued use of arable lands, as well as likely reclaim lands currently lost through desertification.
