UN tackes asteroids

Bahgum

Glorious greetings fellow nations. The magnificent nation of Bahgum is most pleased to invite a constructive debate on the following World issue which the UN could be in an excellent position to pass a resolution on. The proposal is as follows:

There be Rocks up There.....
(International Security, mild)

Whilst the various nations of this great planet content themselves with various rounds of bickering over guns, diseases, wars, naked ladies, hippos, which TV channel to watch etc, it has only been by luck that a large rock hasn't dropped out of the sky and ended such arguments for good (although one suspects that the divine powers that be have considered it a few times).
It is proposed that:
A worldwide space debris monitoring system is established with the aim of detecting and giving the longest possible forewarning of dangerous space objects.

A concerted effort is made by the UN to establish regular workshops on just what courses of action, and their feasibility, can be taken if such an object is detected.

The odds may be large (actually they are pretty much an intelligent guess), but not doing anything when the effects could be so severe is not an attractive option. You never know, we may learn something as well!
