Emissions Regulation Proposal...please support

15-01-2004, 16:24
" Description: Pollution from the gas guzzling SUV's and lax efficiency regulations are destroying our atmosphere. This severe lack of disrespect for out planet is speeding up global warming, ripping open the ozone layer, and messing with global weather patterns.

It is proposed that stricter emissions regulations be enacted, and that every vehicle manufacturer produce and sell at least one gasoline/electric hybrid and/or one hydrogen fuel cell vehicle for every 15 regular gasoline models made available by that company"

While I agree with the sentiment of this proposal, I believe it does not go nearly far enough in addressing the very immediate threat to our planet from human-sourced climate change. A proposal of this sort will have little effect.

Unfortunately, we need to consider the harsh truth that radical alterations to our very way of life may be necessary. Personally, I don't believe enough of us will be willing to make the necessary changes and, consequently, we will all suffer.

I'm glad you've brought this subject to the forum's attention though.

while i agree, as has been said before, a journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step....we cannot take drastic measures al of the sudden, but we must make small progress every day

The Rogue Nation of Greenspoint would like to support this proposal. Certain inadequacies, however, prevent us from doing so.

The term 'stricter emissions regulations' would need to be defined, perhaps as a percentage of existing regulations. Using the comparitive 'stricter' without mention of what it's stricter than is inadequate.

You cannot require a manufacturer/seller of a product to control something that is solely up to the discretion of the buying public. A flat demand that vehicle manufacturers sell 1 hybrid/hydro car for every 15 petroleum fueled cars is unteneble. In essence, vehicle manufacturer's don't sell cars, the consumers buy cars.

Given a rewrite addressing these concerns, we would wholeheartedly support the proposal.

The United Socialist States of Zephrys would also like this bill to go further than it does. Fossil fuel burning cars should be banned and replaced with electric cars.

Heck, while we're at it, lets ban cars -- the manufacture of electric cars also cause pollution. If everyone walked, ate only natural food, and stayed in caves, the world would be a lot cleaner. :)

We have in fact banned cars, so the resolution hardly concerns us.
Passage may enhance our relative economic position in the world, since retooling will be costly.

We mainly use mastodons for our mass transit and heavy hauling.
We still have emissions problems, but they are of another kind.
