Euthanasia: Majority Vs. The Forum?

13-01-2004, 12:52
It seems rather odd to me that in most of the boards I encounter here in the forum regarding this topic, nearly all the posts discuss why we should be against this issue, yet the vote (currently) is leaning towards "for". Does anyone else find it rather odd that there would be such a gap between the views of the majority (thus far) of UN members and the views of those who actually go to the forum to discuss the issues?

Not really - the impression I get is that forum-posters are a tiny, tiny minority of the total number of active gamers.

I don't either. The most intelligent of us come to the boards, and we see the issues with this resolution, and why it should fall.

It's because many people don't see the ridiculous loopholes and problems unless they are pointed out to them, and if they don't go on the forums there's no way they can hear about it unless people telegram the delegates who have voted for. Which is what i'm going to do pretty soon.

The stupidest thing is that the author had all the loopholes pointed out to him on the forum when he submitted the proposal for the second time (this is the third time) but paid no notice and the third time he just submitted the same thing, and ignored me when I pointed out what he'd done. :tantrum:

Not odd at all.

1. Most people probably won't bother to post anything if they agree with the resolution and if it's winning currently (as is the case with the Euthanasia proposal). People generally only complain if they don't like the way things are.

2. Many of the people that post frequently on the forums (yes, probably including myself) have way too much free time and tend to be curmudgeons. In the past there has been a nice mix of politics, radical and conservative, right and left. But for some reason, forums lately are dominated by rabid right-wing zealots or rabid libertarian zealots and zealots of all kinds tend to be very confrontational and argumentative, often with little in the way of logic or empirical evidence. These type of posts tend to turn off many other nations and thus other nations don't bother to post much. I know I need to take a vacation from posting now and then just so I don't have to exhaust myself trying to reason with these people.

3. The server on the forums can be quite slow, especially in the afternoon in North America when nations have completed other duties at their jobs and have time to sit at their computers. I often give up because I press "submit" four times before it works. Only really bored, obsessed or zealous nations bother to sit through this process.

It may be the case more often than not that the voters differ with the consensus on this forum.

I doubt many of them even bother reading the proposal; they just go by the title.

I agree that the majority of nations do not bother to read the forums, especially since they've been so slow lately. Pity.
