Proposal - Nike, GAP and other big guns

11-01-2004, 14:33
I think most people are agreed that slave labour is wrong. But if this is the case then why is the use of cheap labour in china, korea and other such countried being ignored?
Large corporations such as Nike and GAP are using cheap labour in third world countries to save money. This should be stopped, or failing that, the wage given to the workers should be raised substantially. Most workers get paid mere pennies or cents for weeks of work, at the very least they should get payed the minimum wage for Britain or the USA.

Approvals would be greatly appreciated.

Not true. What they are being paid is a lot more than the average daily wage in their countries. It may seem like pennies to a developed country, but one must take into account that their cost of loving is much, much lower. So they're being paid more than fairly in this regard.

I disagree, the wage they are being paid is not enough for them to live on, the average wage in their country is not enough for them to live on and they are barely being paid that. It would improve their lives greatly if this proposal was aproved.

(OOC: I just checked, and there's no China or Korea in NS. So your proposal doesn't make sense now. But if you'd like to continue this in the General forum, I'd be more than happy to discuss this with you.)

It is the only job they can find and it restricts them from finding other work or schooling their children.
We would not take their job away, but make their wages higher.

If you rewrote the proposal without the ‘real world’ references and perhaps took into account the different economies of ‘third world’ countries (we agree with them getting more money but would they need as much money as someone in real world USA or UK?)we would gladly endorse it.

I don't think they would need as much as real world US or UK, but they would need substantially more money that they get now.

The Republic of Ithuania, being a moral nation, will not tell companies based within its borders what they are and are not allowed to pay their workers. This is the only moral way.
