Green Issues

08-01-2004, 10:59
Having recently installed Solar plants and wind farms, I was delighted to see the environment improving and my Wombats breathing easily once more.
But now I want to do more and have been thinking of more ways to improve the environment without hammering the economy too much, which is why I thought of banning Ironing. That's right, no more flat clothes, no more irons, no more piles of work for the downtrodden housewife/househusband/homehelp.

Vote for my proposal to Ban Ironing now and lets look forward to a greener, scruffier future.

Seriously though how effective do you reckon this would be on a global scale? An average household in the developed world produces what, 8 hours of ironing a week and an Iron runs at 1.8 kW. Any statistic nuts out there want to do the maths?

This comes out at about 2.7GJ (1 gigajoule = 1000000000 joules) per household per year!

I support your proposal wholeheartedly. If everyone else was also too lazy to do their ironing, I would not look so creased stood next to them.

Mind you, some households must do an awful lot of ironing to make up for those that can't be arsed, if the average is more than an hour a day.

must confess that "8 hours a week" was a complete guess based on my (limited) experience of my own household. Which comprises of 2 adults, neither of whom care very much about ironing, and we produce about 2-3 hours a week. If we were to iron every t-shirt, sock, pair of knickers and tea-towel (some people do you know) it would easily reach 4-5 hours, add a couple of kids....

True, but if you have someone who actually does it regularly, they improve and get faster :) My ex's mother could to the ironing for 3 non-scruffy adults (one of whom required work shirts doing every day, though to be honest she'd iron t-shirts and jeans as well) in 2-3 hours.

Personally, I never iron a damn thing unless I've got to go somewhere posh :)

Having someone iron for me is a pleasant luxury but i hate doing it myself.

It should be easy to find some high-minded philosophy to support this idea.

Save expenditure of energy and fossil fuels.

Avoid fires! Everyone knows irons can be left on and forgotten, starting dangerous fires.

Avoid burns and injuries.

Avoid scorching, ironing stains in deeper, and making creases so sharp they instantly start fraying.

We people of Rulez agree. As an inherently scruffy nation we are tired of being looked down upon because our shirts are not pristine.

Ironing is simply a vanity. We are forced to conform to ideals of smartness which in turn characterise people's impressions. By banning ironing we are changing the way people judge one another as well as saving the environment.

Let us all join hands like hippies, and lobby the world until this proposal is passed.

Our nations' queen doesnt do any ironing and neither does anyone else in the household...what the heck, we can totally support this proposal...!

Why bother banning ironing ,wouldn't it be easier to ban clothes . Thisi would help by negating the fashion trade which is a big contributor to the polution of this planet . The killing and torture of millions of innocent animals . Wouldn't that leave so many more animals to trap and eat .

Instead of banning irons, how about improving them so they are less polluting? It is similar to the idea of electric cars and windfarms, alternative cleaner forms of transportation and energy. I will not vote for this proposal as I believe there are better ways of fixing the environment without outright banning certain freedoms, such as the freedom to iron and the right to smooth clothes.

And how are these wind farms ,electric cars etc to be made . Surely they will need to be manufactured in factories using polluting methods to mould the panels and other parts associated with them .
Have you thought about how wire and cables are made .
How is steel or plastic are produced ? Yes with furnaces (don't they use fossil fuels or even --------NUCLEAR FUELS)

OOC:Traditional power plants are even more polluting in the way they are made - the production of cement is the single most significant contributor to greenhouse gases on the planet. And then they continue to pollute in operation too.

IC: Nah, who cares?!

I think it's been deleted - that sucks - we actually had some valid reasons for that one too.
