The Emergency Laws

07-01-2004, 20:20
All UN members and delegates! The following is a proposal which needs to be approved. Tell your regional delegate to approve the following proposal: The Emergency Laws.

In order to take necessary action against terrorism and espionage, the government may be allowed to invoke "The Emergency Laws." Should they choose to invoke said laws, they will have the following powers:

*The government may restrict the freedoms of speech, association, and the press whenever necessary.
*The government may suspend privacy rights in regards to e-mail, mail, phone, etc.
*The government may imprison any suspected traitors, terrorists, spies, etc. Those arrested under these charges can have all rights taken away, should the government choose to do so.
*When the state of emergency ends, these laws won’t be in effect until the next time they are activated.

I'm offering the United Nations a way to make our countries safe from outsiders. The only way to do so is to give the government certain rights it may invoke during a state of emergency. What would you rather have: a terrorist running free or rotting in your jail cells?

Hmm, Catholic Europe supports this proposal. It would seem to be a proposal which enables a nationstate to protect itself and its citizens from those who may wish to cause it harm.

We believe this to be a good thing and thus support the proposal.

There is far too much potential for abuse by the government in this resolution. When our freedoms are challenged by terrorists and espionage we need to strengthen our freedoms, not have them taken away. A government cannot show itself to be strong unless all other ideas are able to be tested and espressed against it.

I will not approve of it and will vote against it if it reaches the floor.

There's already a discussion over the PATRIOT act, this sounds a less accurate version of it. It's not going to happen. My nation will surely resing the U.N. if something like this is approved.

Why is that? Why do you think that?

Do you not value the safety of your nation and its people?

While The Commonwealth of the Pure Existence already considers this a viable option, there are several problems with this proposal. As stated, there is a high likelyhood of abuse of these powers by the Government. I strive for unity within my people. I don't enjoy restricting civil rights. My people experience a life of total freedom in their personal lives regardless of my dictatorship. However, in an emergency, I wouldn't think twice about doing what it takes to protect my people, and we all understand, and support this plan. This brings me to my second point. This kinda of plan would not be viable in many countries, especially those that do not have unity of purpose and existence. Simply put, this is unfit for UN consideration. While I would that all countries be like minem most are not ready. In other words, this is something that should remain up to each individual nation and not forced on all UN member nations. Indeed, if by some means this proposal passes into general voting, I will absolutely vote against it.

The safety of our citizens is to be endangered by the government for avoiding endangerment from other sources? Our community's members resents any involvement of the government in their privacy, as everyone on a democratic nation should.
