Role of the UN

Or at least what i think it should be. The UN isnt here to set down laws for the countries that are within it but rather to hold them together, strive for peace....not to define what government they can and cant have, so none should try to do so!

The UN exists for the same reason national governments do -- to protect individual rights. Governments are a construct created by individuals just like the United Nations is.

I would contend that government's don't exist to protect individual rights. The counterexamples are too numerous to name.

Government's exist to provide a structure and to create a body of law that will maintain and augment that structure. Oftentimes, this has very little, if anything, to do with individual rights.

I believe our roles should be:
-to protect human rights
-enforce international law
-promote peace
-defuse current or potential conflicts
-provide humanitarian aid in developing nations and disasters

How the bloody hell are we supposed to do ANY of this stuff if no resolutions come before the entire body??? Sigh... this is becoming a waste of my time.

Are you asking about this in an IC or OOC sense? Because redhawks' suggestions are all well and good, but only half of them apply as game mechanics currently stand.

IC, I think that the UN exists to create and enforce laws that are globally applicable--laws that should exist in unwritten form, but that often need definition and enforcement.

OOC, the UN exists to give people something to argue about. :D

I disagree with the first part of your second sentence, but agree with the rest.

By "well and good" I meant "a reasonable opinion," not "something I agree with wholeheartedly." Sorry about the confusion... :D
