Proposal:Suicide...

Suicide- the Other Option
A resolution to improve worldwide human and civil rights.

Category: Human Rights Strength: Significant Proposed by: Freeshire
Description: Many nations all over the world have deemed capital punishment as immoral. Instead, convicts that would otherwise be executed are usually sentenced with life imprisonment.
One cannot help but ask, "Is life imprisonment the moral choice? Is it moral to let the convict waste away the remainder of his life in a cell -left only to think about the grievious act that he or she has commited?"
Another choice should be given to the person sentenced to life in prison-suicide. The method by which the convict would be allowed to kill his/herself by would be a painless one- only a painless one. The convict could choose suicide at any point in his/her sentence.
Suicide is the right to every human being. It should only be used when a person has reached the "end of their rope," and every other resort is gone.
If this proposal goes all the way, every nation with ban on capital punishment should give criminals with the life sentence the option of a clean, painless suicide.

Some people think that they're situation is hopless and may decide so to early, not really realising what they want. I propose a series of injections 3(i.e. 1 a month). If they really want to die, so they will. If not, they shall end with a messed up heart and liver, but shall still have a chance to live.

What's the difference between execution and suicide, except who carries out the act? If you ban one, your gonna end up banning the other.

And I also point out that most people on life sentence get out after about 20 years these days....

Areya supports capital punishment. Why give criminals a painless death when they made others suffer? What goes around comes around, not commit crime, die in peace.

The completely spectacular and terribly cool nation of Berkylvania heartily supports the right to 'fall on your sword' as we feel that it adds a certain sense of drama and romanticism heartily lacking in today's world.

With all due respect, this proposal is unnecessary.
If a prisoner wants to commit suicide, they can/will do so whether-or-not they are given the "right" to do so. There are already numerous accounts of prisoners hanging themselves in their cells. You can not grant them a "right" that they already have.
The proposal is baseless and should not reach a quorum.

We fear such suicides will be "encouraged" by guards and other staff.

As most lawmakers have found, making suicide legal or illegal is rather pointless. Providing painless ways to commit it, however, encourages suicide. This is essentially a psycologically inflicted death penalty. If a person is so desperate that they actually want to die, they do not need some state sponsored service to help them. The point of a prison system should be prevention and rehabilitation. While it is debatably argued that capitol punishment helps prevention, suicide assists in neither of these.

The difference is this: the criminals get a choice between life or death.

You're missing the point here. This is giving criminals -sentenced with life imprisonment- the oppurtunity kill themselves. Suicide is very difficult to commit in most prisons (jail cells and items in them are designed to make commiting suicide and creating weapons difficult).

Yes, it is moral: People in jail committed (with a few regretful exceptions) a crime and should not be allowed to escape from that fact.

Besides, just because someone is in jail they're still able to be productive members of society: Admittedly they won't be serving in McDonalds (assuming that qualifies as productive), but there are plenty of opportunities for them to work in the state-run recycling plants.

Wow. The UN hasn't taken a position on euthanasia, I believe, and now the issue is being complicated by the death penalty? I doubt this proposal will reach quorum. Euthanasia is already a hot enough topic, and I believe that to be the true matter at hand here.

Once again, your missing the point here. THE DIFFERENCE IS: *drumroll* the convict gets a choice between life and death. Also, this proposal is for criminals with a LIFE SENTENCE- not those who have the option of perol.

Euthanasia should only be permissable upon the testimony of a qualified doctor that the patient has no hope of recovery and has lost all quality of living. Otherwise, anyone who ever got depressed could just get themselves euthanized.

The Rogue Nation of Kodic, votes AGAINST.
[REASON:] Why should criminals be given the choice of suicide? By passing this, you will allow a criminal to get off easy. They should be imprisoned in a small, dark, and soundless cell for the remainder of their lives. Or, They should be placed on an isolated island, sorrounded by a large wall, sorrounding the island (10 miles out from shore). Let the criminal suffer for their crime, do not allow them an easy death.

Blah.. in our nation, there's a mandatory death sentence for suicide. Anyone who succeeds will be immediately sentenced to death without appeal.

This proposal wouldn't affect "anyone." It would affect -like I've said many a time- criminals who are sentenced with life imprisonment. Therefore, anyone wouldnt be able to "just get themselves euthanized."

While I can't tell whether this was the intent of the poster, the literal interpretation of that would handle disagreements easily -- it doesn't have any provision for debate, but rather only says that one approval is needed (the disagreement would thus be irrelevant as far as the law is concerned).

It really seems odd to treat prisoners as a special case in this matter -- I'd say that either everyone should be allowed the option of assisted suicide or no one should. Medical justification is a debate for another proposal, I think.

There are other concerns, as well; what if prisoners were coerced into taking this path?

As the criminals commit crimes they should not have a chance to run off from their punishment. Therefore a possibility of commiting suicide shouldn't be given even to the prisoners sentenced to death.

We do not in any way support this proposal. Suicide is wrong and should not be allowed to be commited. People can commit suicide but that does not mean we endorse it or think that it is right.

We, humans, should have no say over when we die - only God has that right. Suicide, however, breaks that rule and thus passing this proposal would in our eyes, allow people everywhere to break that rule and for the state to willfully allow suicide to occur.
